Mercon 5

In the UK Mercon 5 is almost impossible to get hold of, what are the alternatives, if any? How much is needed for a full gearbox change? (in pints or litres please)

Capacity is 10.8 quarts, you need 7 for a valve body drop, and about 3.5 for a pan/filter drop. You can use Dex/Merc if you add Lubegard in the green bottle. You may be able to use Mobil 1 synthetic but I am not really sure.

Thanks for that, found some on ebay from the same supplier, 19 euro cheaper for some reason. When you use the site to ship to the UK they charge 49 euro for delivery.

I have used Lubeguard Platinum in my Mercon V because:

Enhances DEXRON® III, VI/MERCON® ATF’s to perform like MERCON® V ATF

Enhances DEXRON® III, VI/MERCON® , V ATF to perform like a highly friction modified ATF, such as:

– Honda® Genuine ATF
– Toyota® Type T/TII/TIV
– Mopar® ATF + 3® (7176)
– Mopar® ATF +4® (9602)
– And all other highly friction modified ATF's

So I guess, you can use regular ATF and use Lubeguard in it to get to Mercon V. Or just use Toyota's ATF, no wonder that their transmissions last that long
