Mercon V Alternative?

i think you'd be fine (and save a few $) using Dex/Merc.

Actually the bulletin says you can use EITHER M or V as shown in their chart.
Are you really looking at the TSB 06-14-4 link that I posted? There is no "chart" in there.
MERCON ATF IS BEING REPLACED BY MERCON V ATF AS A SERVICE FLUID.
This article supersedes TSB 01-15-7 to update the SERVICE PROCEDURE
vehicle application chart.

So even if Ford issued a TSB that recommends the use of Mercon V in Explorers serviced previously by Mercon (91-97), you think that a random person from an internet forum knows better?

Good luck with your transmission.

Hi Ray, you have a V6 transmission, and those need extra care, which the remote filter is great to have. Changing the fluid is ideal and flushing doesn't really help unless the old was neglected or had debris in it(yet not getting a rebuild).

I would install one of the available valve body kits, they do help the lifespan of the trans. Those were designed for the Mercon V in mind even if they may have had Mercon I to start with.

I'd also add a bigger cooler in front(or add one with the OEM unit(in parallel if possible)), and a larger pan. Adding capacity is not needed if the vehicle is babied, but for harder usage, the extra fluid will keep it cooler.

Bigger cooler... didn't think of that.

How many quarts then to do the flush? I did it once and I sort of remember that I used 5 quarts.

Change as much of the fluid as you can. Five sounds about normal for a basic dropping of the pan and filter. Adding the other things will increase the amount of ATF in the system, and it's too bad we cannot drain the torque converter.

Flushing it with a machine service would help get fluid from the lines and TC, but it's fine to just do a pan and filter service every 25-50k miles, longer if you drive easy, no towing etc.

The very last paragraph in the '01 Sport Trac owner's manual says "MERCON and MERCON V are not interchangeable. DO NOT mix MERCON and MERCON V."
