I was driving around today on rough city roads and everytime I press the brakes to stop I could hear a sound similar to a tire running over a thin sheet of metal. It also make the same sound (it creeks- relieving pressure sound) for a few seconds driving from a dead stop.

It doesn't make that sound while diving over rough roads though, only when stopping or from a dead stop.

Anyone got any ideas what this could be? I'm getting nervous driving around in my X with my family inside. :(

Yeah, jack that baby up , pull the front drivers wheel, then pull the caliper. Bet you'll find either a sticking caliper, worn out brake pad, thrashed out rotor or all the above. Metal noises while braking AREN'T good, ned immediate attention.

I just changed the brake pads about a month ago. I noticed they are not getting worn out us much as the rear pads. Could it be something?

Rotors seem fine. How do you check or know if the calipers are sticking?

I appreciate anyones help.

Well, I checked the brake pads and the whole caliper assembly and grease the be-jesus out of it. Also, I changed the Sway Bar End Links as James T suggested, use a can of WD-40 to spray every bolts and connections I could see underneath and STILL the damn clanking noise is there.

The sound is the same as flicking your finger on the edge of a thin sheet of metal. At times the noise would disappear when stopping and then it would just come back again.

Note: Sorry that I am using my own thread again. I was using nweibley thread and was getting better response from everyone.

Huh?!
Maybey anti rattle clip?

I think it's a bad u-joint. I don't think it's a brake issue.

I also checked the Ball Joints, as HARTMAN suggested, by holding the tire at the top and bottom and shaking it vigorously- nothing.

I ruled out the brakes. I greased that thing so much, it wouldn't rattle if I put it a can.

I'm thinking the Edelbrock Shocks since that is the last change I did. Could it be after only a month? Although, it does not make rattling/metal clicking sound when I hit a bump. Only when I'm slowing down to stop.

U-joint sir, not ball joint. Check the u-joints.

LOL... on a different thread that nwiebly started you suggested to me, "bite the bullet and change the ball joints" or something of that sort. I was refering to that one. :D

But okay, u-joints, got it.

Update: Well, it wasn't the U-Joints but close. It was the U-bolts. It came loose and needed to be re-torqued.

Its a relief to drive around without the annoying clanking and rattling sound. People were starting to stare in the wrong way :D. Picture of the culprit is here.
