Have a 1999 Explorer XLS 4L. I'm trying to add a cold air intake assembly but the speed shop needs to know which fuel injection system I have, presumably the feed back sensors are different. I've looked all over the stock assembly for markings but nothing stands out to me. I've checked a half dozen forums and done web searches but nothing has been helpful. My next stop is the dealer but was hoping to avoid that trip. Can anyone help? Thanks.

the engine is a 4.0 ohv, it has a mass airflow sensor, so you need one that works with that sensor,,

like this one,

Went to the ford dealership and they told me that their computer records by VIN only go back to 2001 so anything prior they can't tell without a hands on inspection. Luckily I went to the speed shop and a Ford mechanic was waiting at the counter and he told me the secret.
MFI has the intake on the throttle body closer to the firewall and SFI has the intake directly in the front.
Hope that helps.

MFI= multiport fuel injection. SFI= sequential fuel injection. Aren't these essentially the same thing? Both systems have the injectors in the intake manifold just in front of the valve, and are not "batch fire" like my old 86 F-150.

Turns out he was wrong. Or at least they ordered the wrong kit. The K&N 57-2758 kit didn't fit because the main pipe was about 3" too short, the bend to the throttle body was 45deg instead of 90deg, and the hose to the throttle body was about a 1/4" to large. Other than that, with some effort and more hose and clamps I might have made it work.
The speed shop ordered me the 57-2757 kit and hopefully it will be right.
What a pain.

i live in Canada, my cold air intake is a 7 month winter,

so i didn't really need to buy one ,,

Yeah, my 96 has the intake from the inner fender. It is cold air from the factory. So buying a cold air system would just be a waste of money.

Got it installed and am happy with it. Looks great. Frees up room for other stuff. Not much performance change but attacking the exhaust next.
