Mirror Tinted Glass

Hello All

I have a 97 Mountaineer that I am thrilled with for the most part. I bought it about 4 months ago and spent a great deal of time and effort making sure the mechanicals and body were in good shape and that nothing was going to surprise me when I got it home. So far everything has been great, I just have one complaint, I HATE the mirror tint in the glass, I was so busy paying attention to everything else I totally overlooked that, had I noticed it I probably wouldn't have bought the truck. I know this sounds crazy but it bothers me soooo much I am tempted to have the glass changed out. I much prefer the "black" factory tint. Has anyone tried this? I figure I can round the glass up at wrecking yards, I have no idea about the labor costs yet. Can anyone tell me which years glass is interchangable with my 97. Thanks for any insights you can off

Scott, I hate the mirror tint too. The later model '97 Explorers and Mountaineers (some of the last built) have the black tint. It would be easiest to find one of those and swap out the glass. I have also seen 91-94 XLs and 95-97 XLSs that have no stock tint at all, although those are rare. You could swap the glass and have it all tinted if you found one of those.

Either way, it won't be cheap or easy.

If im correct, i believe that you should look fo the windoes off a 97 EB, as i believe all 97 EB's haev the black tint. best of luck

let me know if you replace your glass. I have the mirrored glass in a 97 mountainner but I have one pane (the small piece in the 2row door on the driver side) that is regular. It was broken into and no one in the city could find the mirrored stuff to match so I have just a dark grey in there.

I would be willing to pay some for that one piece if the price was right
