I have a 96 XLT 4.0L Explorer with about 230,000 miles. Every once in a while it idles rough and sometimes while driving it acts like it is skipping but clears and then runs good. Last week it was running bad at highway speed for about 15 minutes and the check engine light came on which indicated a misfire in cylinder 3. With great effort I took the spark plug out in cylinder 3 and compared it to cylinder 6. I have enclosed a picture of the spark plugs. As you can see one of the plugs has a lot of gunk on the threads.
I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem but one other problem is that the Explorer "uses" coolant. About every 2 months I have to fill up the coolant reservoir. It doesn't seem to be leaking.
Any ideas what could be causing the problem?
