You could try cleaning the mas (mass air sensor) the one by the air filter. Check the air filter. Could also be that the fuel is dirty after sitting for 6 months.

re miss fire

hi howard thanks for the advice
miss fire seems to be gone now but have come across another problem
while she is ticking over she sounds ok but once i put my foot on gas pedal i get what sounds like the timing chains making a noise even while i am driving but if i ease my foot off pedal the noise goes away but once i press gas peadal again its back sounds a bit like a diesel engine after reading a few threads on here am maybe thinking that it might be the timing as the garage that did the work replacing the timing chains and tensioners had never worked on an explorer before so probably didnt use the the tools to set timing up so would it still run if that was the case and would that cause the chain noise i am getting plus some times i am getting like a surging as if it cant find right gear in auto like a clutch slipping in a manual drive car

There is no other way to do the timing without the tools. If they have the timing wrong it would lead to poor performance and possibly damage. New chains should not rattle. If I was you I would seek a second opinion from a good mechanic who knows explorers (which may be hard to find).

hi thanks for the reply howard
i have decided to reject the car now got the trading standards fighting in my corner to get my money back. plus i have seen a newer ex with less milage and from a ford dealer with full service history only down side is it has cloth seats instead of the leather so will be test driving her soon. well at leat i know what faults to look for now after the last six months thanks once again for the advice hope this time it turns out all right kenny
