For some reason Ford put either short splash shields on the rear only (like on my late production '01 ST) full splash shields like those on Gen II regular Explorers, or even no splash shields on ST's. You can add them if you like. The holes are there. You can get full shields from RockAuto.

I could of sworn they were there before..does anyone have a picuture of their wheel well...thanks everyone

I had to add them to my '05, but only on the passenger side. The drivers side hod one in place. One small advantage I noticed was that is was a little quieter in the cab after I installed it.

Thanks everyone..went to the junkyard and none had the splash shields..i cant believe that it came factory without them..such a gapping gap..

I read somewhere that the splash shield was left off to help control temperature in engine compartment. After I put mine on I did not notice any change in temp, so....

On my 96, the factory ones were getting worn out and cracking. I did tear one either changing spark plugs or changing shocks for some reason. In the couple pick-a-parts yards I go to, finding ones that are intact is rare, and finding ones that are worth picking is ever more rare. I think I have pulled three. One "use-able" just to get by, one "very good" , and one "excellent". I think I paid $1 each maybe. I think my next ones will be aftermarket ones from eBay. At one point, I found some for dirt cheap.

I think they help keep dirt, dust, debris, etc out of the engine compartment...

X2 on the Rock Auto splash shields. Perfect fit on my 2001, both sides.

I install my splash shields with plastic push-rivets. This makes them easy to remove/reinstall. Dorman makes the push-rivets (don't recall the size I used, but I did need to increase the stock holes in the plastic inner fender 1 step-drill size. Most auto parts stores carry the plastic push-rivets on a Dorman fastener rack.

Appreciate everyone's advice..ill be buying the rockauto brand...the junkyard had zero possibilities..cant believe it left the factory like that..totally exposed engine block and wires...
