Missing & Surging

Several weeks ago my Explorer began missing and surging from idle to redline and the check engine light comes on. It doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes I smell a foul odor coming from the tailpipe but not always. The problem happens while in neutral or while driving. I checked the codes with my el-cheapo scanner and it showed nothing wrong, so I took it to a large shop and they scanned it and also showed nothing wrong. The funny thing is that it doesn't miss all the time, but when it does the CEL comes on too. I did notice that when I disconnect the battery and reconnect it the truck runs fine for a few days. This is baffling me and I am afraid to go anywhere with it. I have had it since new and it only has 53,000 miles on it.

I hope someone here can give me a clue as to what it may be. I did a search and didn't find any similar problem.

I'd start by having the fuel pressure tested. It sounds like you might have a problem with the fuel pressure regulator.
