Hello all, I just got a '96 AWD 5.0 Explorer in November and want to do somethings to it. I found this site and have been trying to educate myself on the basic mods for these trucks. I have a modified '89 Mustang GT, so wrenching is no problem. What is a good catback system for my '96? I haven't looked but I think my catback is the two-flange. I see Gibson units are used a lot - I have Flowmasters on the Mustang, so really want something different. I have a K&N on my Mustang and hope to get one for the '96. I am having trouble finding the 75W140 synthetic gear oil at parts stores. Should I just go to Ford for this and the friction modifier? The book says to use this on rear and 80W90 on the front diff. What about the transfer case? It has 111k on it, should I change the fluid? Sorry to be lengthy - thanks!

I use Motorcraft synthetic blend oil from Ford in my diff. It's a bit pricey, but I know it's good stuff. I also use their friction modifier.

As for mods, I recommend a custom Magnaflow system. Just go to your local Magnaflow dealer and they'll set you up. This is usually cheaper and turns out better than ordering a pre-made catback kit. As for intake, but the KKM www.kustomz.com and the MAC intakes are good units and are cheaper than the KN.

Ford is on crack - $18 for a qt of sythetic gear oil. I found some thru a Mustang vendor for .5 that. I also ordered a K&N - will be a Saturday morning project (now that the Mustang has a tranny in it).

Amsoil has the gear lube you want.

What about my transfer case - should I change the fluid in it and what and how much does it take? Thanks!
