I've now owned my 2000 Explorer Limited (SOHC 4x4) for just a little over a year. It had 76,500 original kms on it when purchased, and in one year the odometer has just rolled over to 94000kms (ie: approx 60000miles).
1. Very first mod was the K&N FIPK cold air intake kit. Was quite pleased with the unit, it was a quality piece that installed easily in my home garage with hand tools.
At this same time, I had installed a P-Maf 75mm MAF sensor, purchased from ExplorerExpress.
Recently, I have replaced the stock K&N oiled filter, with the Amsoil EaAU filter 6065. As it is a slightly longer unit (half inch more media height, and the flange is about 3/8 of an inch longer), I performed the "custom air inlet in inner fender wall" originally posted by Aldive (RIP). This larger hole in the inner fender allowed for more easily connecting the longer filter, as the recess allowed for greater maneuverability.
2. I replaced all spark plugs with E3 Diamondfires.
3. Stock shocks were swapped out in favor of Rancho RS 5000's. At this time, sway bar links were replaced as well using polyurethane bushings.
4. A Superchips Cortex tuner was purchased, and I am currently running the Heavy Tow tune for 91 Octane fuel.
5. A Gibson stainless catback system was installed. It was found to slightly vibrate against the fatter rear shock, on the passenger side, and thus I have ordered Bilstein B6 HD's (a monotube, more compact shock design) for the rear, in addition to ordering the same type of shock to replace the 5th shock (axle wrap). Add-a-leaf springs will be installed in the rear to correct the sag commonly experienced with 2nd gen explorers riding around on factory leaf packs.
6. In cosmetic modifications, I removed the gold pinstripes. Aftermarket smoked taillights were also installed to do something about the more dated look of the stock tails. I hesistate doing too many cosmetic modifications, as I find they attract attention, and I kind of like the stock sleeper look, not to mention surprising drivers of a few other unsuspecting V8 drivers in my weight class (Grand cherokees, tahoes, etc.)
Mods that will be completed in the near future include: Magnaflow catalytic converters, and the gibson stainless ceramic coated headers to complete the exhaust upgrade.
I've always consulted the message boards here for advice, installation pics, and inspiration. If anyone has any questions about the mods I've completed thus far, I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. Pics to follow in the coming days.
