Just completed some mods to my new 2000 Sport 4.0L SOHC. Thought I'd share my impressions of the results.
1. Exhaust system. Started with a Magnaflow. Left the original 2.25" pipes in, went to one 2.5" pipe out. Too LOUD.
Went back and added a resonator behind the magnaflow, sounds better now. Also without the resonator I was loosing some low-end torque. If I did it again I would go with a 2.25" pipe out. Satisfaction low on this mod.
2. K&N air filter, modified the filter box. I wanted to try to access outside air. I reamed a 6" diameter hole next to original 1" air hole and inserted a 6"
to 8" ABS landscapedrainage funnel (Home Depot) into the hole and the 8" end just fit up into the grillwork gap to the left of the passenger headlight. At least in th daytime I think it will get plenty of cool air. Satisfaction of this mod: High, it made a difference.
3. Installed a SuperChip (#1100 Flash Blue for CDE4 computer). Really nice. The response is much better and the Auto Transmission doesn't seem to be confused now with a light foot. Better accelleration at the low end (1500-3500 rpms.) Satisfaction with this mod:High. I won't be sending it back..

When you purchased the SuperChip did you mention the modified air box? I have heard the SuperChip can custom program their chips for certain modification that are done to your truck to get better performance out of the chip. Did you get this done or did you purchase the standard chip? How much did it cost?

Hi Robert, I also own a 00' sport and have wanted to do some modifications to it. Where did you purchase the superchip? That's my only question... for now.

The chip was purchased directly from
Superchips. I called their office direct at
1-888-CAR-CHIP. You will need an extension to
the TECH. department (3030). Have the larger
numbers ready from the EEC computer (found at
top of firewall, passenger side). Mine was
CDE 4. I gave this number to the Tech and
told him I had improved the air intake
andexhaust with mods. I have the impression
this went in one ear and out the other,
because when I got the chip, it was packaged
like it was off the shelf.
However, I still like it and understand
it's limitations. Having the auto trans made
it worth the money. The paper instructions
were not very complete, they mention
loosening one nut and the computer backing
out,...how about taking 4 nuts, a frame and
pushing the feed wires out of the way...Still
all in all it wasn't that hard. The cost was
265 plus shipping total ($280). If indeed,
they are not moding the chip to account for
any air exchange mods, you might be better
off finding it at a performance shop. rg

Hey Robert!!

Glad to hear that your impressed with a chip. Did that affect your factory warranty? Also, I carry clients in my 98 "exploder" as my wife say, wondering if the exhaust mod you made is distracting, you know, does it sound like a hopped up jap 4 bangger. Thanks for taking the time to share your results

Hey Keach: I would'nt exactly say the exhaust is distracting...but it's not really impressive either. If you decide to do it, you can do better than this combination:
Magnaflow + 2.5" outlet pipe + resonator. rg
