pinging

i would say it sounds like youve got a bad egr valve.
if youve got 170k i would replace that.

if you notice louder pinging right after start up and during load its most likely that egr valve, i'd give it a shot checker has'em for 38 bucks. good luck

TPS price

DeagleDave, the TPS costs $22.00 at O'riley auto parts. AutoZone might have it also. It should only take 1-2 minutes to replace. It has two Phillips screws and is on the driver side of the intake manifold. Reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for 5-10 minutes. I recommend replacing the TPS first before you purchase the EGR. Most parts stores don't stock parts with a low failure rate. Not much profit in keeping parts that sit on the shelf. I thought my problem was going to be an EGR until I talked to some of my mechanic friends. Be sure the vacuum hoses near the EGR do not have holes. There are two hoses that are about 4 inches long. If you are using transmission oil, the vacuum modulator might be broken and allowing transmission fluid to enter the intake manifold at the vacuum tree. Mine did that and was using a pint of transmission fluid every two to three weeks. You can check by removing each one from the vacuum tree one at a time and inspect for signs of oil. Of course there should be no oil. If there is the vacuum modulator on the transmission is broken.

my 92 X doesn't have an EGR valve, so does that negate the TPS too?

No, you still have a TPS.

DeagleDave

I was looking through this thread to see if there was anything new and I realized that no one ever answered your question. When they say TPS I believe they are referring to the throttle positioning sensor, the name of which describes its job.

I can't tell you why that would cause pinging unless it was accompanied by erratic throttle response or idling.

I used to own a Lightning and I had to constantly worry about ping and detonation. Here is what my tuner told me about gas. It isn't always about octane. Qualtiy has a lot to do with it as well. You want to run the highest octane you can that also has the highest btu's. Obviosly this is more important on a supercharged motor over a n/a motor. What brand of fuel are you running? If it is an off brand like clark or thortons than the btu's aren't there and you will get pinging. Your best bet is to stop running the chvron cleaner and go with a good quality fuel like mobil, texaco, or amoco. yes it sucks to pay more for gas but believe me it is worth it. I used to tow my 20ft boat with my Lightning and I would get pinging until I changed the type of gas i was using. I only ran 93 from mobil and I could tow it with the race program. Just my .02

how about just using chevron gas that already has the techron in it? costs the same as mobil/shell/etc, but you dont have to worry about adding techron

The chevron gas has suffered in quality since the mid to late 90's. They have had production problems and their gas isn't as clean anymore which is why they add techron.

Another thing to think about is type of gas. The Mohawk (Husky) stations up here add 10% ethanol to thier gas. I find that running regular shell or esso gas gives me a ping but running the ethanol blend reduces it considerably. I do most of my driving in the mountains and foothills so my truck is usually under load climbing hills and such. Something to think about...

pingy

I would check you MAF volts. Mine was a little off and I had pingy going up hills only. Pinging is gone after switching to pro-meter so far.

Now on the gas Higher octane burns at a slower rate giving more time for the piston to be pushed down. Gas flash burns easier at low octanes which causes the piston to rattle in the bore al ping........ In the good old days mix a little moonshine in the tank helped matter greatly:chug:
