Hi just put ex through mot. Failed on exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle, corroded brake pipe running across back axle and from front to back behind fuel tank and front lower suspension arm ball joint exxcessive play
First the emissions the exhaust is very old and it was noted that a few minor leaks.would this cause high lambda readings
Can yyou buy and make your own brake lines and connections
Can the bottom ball joints get pressed out and just renew the joint
Many thanks for any help on these matters peter

HI peter cant help on emissions you can make your own brake pipes. bottom ball joint remove hub remove circlip from top of ball joint knock out with mash hamer after soaking with wd40 or other oil. push back in with big socket or pipe of some sort using trolley jack done mine at the weekend faily easy. also befor removing hub check top ball joint, inner tie rod, track rod end, wheel bearing all are easier to do at the same time. there are plenty of threads on here and utube to help you.

Thanks for your reply have been looking at all threads on here and all the answers are here.Still unsure of emissions but will fit new exhaust and try that many thanks. Peter

BOOO MOT man, for shame.
If you search this UK forum there have been a couple of threads on the brake pipe fittings size. Thought if all yours come undone easily you could reuse the ends on the new piping.
For the ball joint go for a good quality one if you are going to keep the truck a while. I put a cheap one on mine and it only lasted a couple of years. If you put the new one in the freezer overnight and get it out just before fitting it will press in a lot easier and clean up the aperture before fitting to.
TIP .... the clamping bolt for the ball joint on the hub has to come out to release the shaft, not just loosen.

Thanks Jan for those tips.will be getting ford ball joints the old ones lasted well.would you say the old exhaust is playing up lambda readings, the exhaust looks to be original and is in a state with a few leaks.I done a search and many people have said this is main cause. Thanks for your reply mate pete

Hi,

My 2011 MOT was done with what I think was the original exhaust which would be about 14 years old and was in quite a state and sounded awful when under load. The emissions were 0.00% CO and 16ppm HC which all things considered I thought was pretty good. I changed the exhaust anyway afterwards because it was falling apart but it just goes to prove you can pass emissions with a knackered exhaust. So by all means change the exhaust but maybe don't expect an instant fix for emissions!
Of course if you are talking further up like the catalytic converter area then it may be a different story.
Incidentally the mileage was about 88k on a standard vehicle.

Cheers,

SS

Hi ss

It failed on lambda readings. The co and hc ppm are very low.spoke to the tester and he said exhaust had leaks in it and he thinks that this is what is causing it.
The exhaust is original 1998 and done 144,000 and running on lpg thanks peter

Peter, mine failed the emission test because a hole had appeared behind the heat shield on the rear box. I bought a replacement rear section off the net , can't remember where, maybe eBay, but it was only around £60.00. It fitted after a it of jiggling about and it then sailed though with no problems.
