Motor needs to be replaced

I have my truck in the shop to get the front timing chain tensioner & lower intake gaskets replaced (typical SOHC motor issuesnad I only have 58,000 miles too.),

When they pulled the valvecover, they found so much sludge, they recommended not doing anything since the tensioner noise was not so bad, AND because all that sludge would eventually clog the oliling ports and kill the motor making the repair virtually a waste of time & money.

I looked at it myself too, Looks like a chocolate covered motor underthere. Worse motor I have ever seen in my life, pure neglect by the previous owner for sure.

They suggested doing a total rebuild, swapping motors from a donor truck, a New Jasper Motor, or just putting it all back together & I drive tilll it dies. I have not had any quotes yet, as I told them I wanzted to think it through.

I see this all to often. Pick up a quart of oil detergent or diesel fuel, let engine cool, drain your oil pan, leave filter on. Replace oil plug, add detergent/diesel into the oil spout, start engine and let it idle for about 5 mins. Turn off engine, drain oil once more, replace filter, pour in fresh oil leaving plug out, watch until you see fresh oil draining from the engine, replace plug and continue oil change as normal.

When you do this treatment the diesel/detergent breaks down the sludge and turns it into a dark chocolate milk colored mess. Do this on your next few oil changes and it will wash all the sludge build up out. The diesel is strong enuff to liquify lithium grease so it will make short work of the sludge.

It's way to common any more for shops to try to bend your arm into a rebuild when $2 of diesel will accomplish the same goal.

Limited maybe, costly I wouldn't say. You can do the oil detergent or diesel trick for under $10.00 if done at the same time as your next oil change. You would be very surprised at how much sludge this treatment will clean out. It will also clean out all your small oil ports etc.

It breaks down the oil kinda like using gas to clean paint off your hands. When you watch it drain you will see sludge gurgling out like curded milk.

I would try this and if it works, then you'll maybe save some money. If not,then you already know you could be possibly be looking at replacing motor. For $10 or less you'll have an answer.

dont get taken for a ride, engine sludge can be cleaned up to as good as new.

once the engine is flushed, use synthetic oil. it has fewer break down and sludge issues than dino.

Oh they are not suggesting a rebuild by them at all.
They suggested just to put the motor all back together intil the timing chain rattle got louder, then come back. He basically told me he hated to see me dump so much money into an 8 year old truck.

Now, after I drain the oil, I only put in 1 QUART and 1 QUART only of diesel fuel? Is this enough?

Doesn't this eventually clog the motor up or the oil pump pick up tube?

I thought they took the Billstein Engine Flush machine off the market because it tore up too many motors?

hmm, I'm interested in seeing what this diesel fuel trick can do. I've heard of it before but have never seen it done. Please report your findings and be specific if you cary out this method. Please be specific too. Perhaps an after photo with a cam cover off?

if you dont want to use diesel, use a reputable detergent like Seafoam.


if you dont want to get your hands dirty, just go to the local 10 minute oil change place. they charge maybe $40 for a crankcase cleaning.
