How can i tell what year the motor is? Just had a motor replaced from my 2003 explorer (V8) and the check engine light is on now. The shop says its from the egr stuff which was not on this motor. They have to drill two holes and add some tubes to make this check engine go away???? They told me its a newer motor than a 2003, I think they are full of $H1T and want to find out for my self. It now runs crappier, shifts terrible and has worse fuel mileage. Please any info would be great.

Thanks in advance.

When I recently had my 2002 motor replaced I found that it was a year specific motor. I was very tempted to jump on other years offered and then have the tech figure the differences out but decided against it. I luckily found a very low mileage motor for a great price.

When he finished the install the CE light went on but apparently was a residual effect of the replaced motor. (It had to do with something related to RPMs..?) Anyway, it was reset and fine ever since.

all of the 4.6L's have EGR stuff... your tech may have been an idiot, there are no holes to drill... more details please? i think your tech is full of crap, i put a 2005 4.6l into my 2003 truck and all i had to do was swap over certain parts to make it work...

The engine should be stamped with the original VIN or an engine number that can be cross referenced to determine year of manufacture.

check the side of the cylender heads.
