Fellows. Found the rear end pinion seal leaking in the '02 S/T. While I'm going to change the fluid/oil I thought it best to replace the seal.

I want to use Motorcraft parts and need to know what the current p/n is. I "think" its BR3Z4676A.

The differential is a 8.8 NON- Limited Slip unit. Its a "straight" axle or that's what I call it. Not an independent unit.

I'm "thinking" that all the "straight" axle equipt S/T's use the same size seal.....
Thanks.

I changed the pinion seal of my daughter's '00 Mountaineer 5.0L a few months ago. A Ford 8.8 rear is a Ford 8.8 rear, so they should all take the same pinion seal as far as I know. I used a seal from AutoZone (their more expensive brand, I don't recall if it was a Timken or National). Worked out fine. I cheated and did not replace the crush sleeve. I just re-tightened the pinion nut until it stopped turning (you can feel when that happens). It takes around 200 ft lbs to crush/torque a new crush sleeve and that's not easy to do laying on your back on the driveway, so I figured that once the nut won't move any more it was good enough for a vehicle with around 260K+ on it. It's been fine. I refilled it with regular 80W90 gear oil. It was an LSD, but the clutches are worn out, so good enough. No noises and no leaks to-date.

BTW - The term for non-LSD is an "open axle".
