im trying to find a way to mount my new double din in my 05 explorer. i was trying to find a way to fabricate the mounting bracket of my stock radio onto the DD. any ideas as how to mount it or what ways to get around it?

According to Crutchfield this item doesnt even fit the 3rd gen... but then again Crutchfield is kind of stupid and thinks only like 25% of headunits out there dooo fit. Have you "dry fitted" it in the dash? When I install my new deck this weekend I'll look around at the inside and see if I can't give you any insight on my thoughts (if you still need them by then). Stand by.

i got it in yesterday. the trim ring that it came with didnt fit so im going to have to make a custom one. other than that it fits near perfectly. crutchfield is gaaaayy, lol. 3rd gens dont have double dins, but you can mount one in there with a little imagination and skill.

yes, I mounted my double din Kenwood with a hot glue gun and some screws.

Just wondering, did you have to use an antenna adapter with your old 8600 hu? I just want to know so I can buy one before I go pick up the HU, so I will have everything to install it right away. Thanks! :)

sounds....interesting. i used two pieces of sheet metal brackets on either side of the HU. basically there are two "L" shaped brackets held in place by those zipties. hard to explain, fairly simple to do.

nope, no antenna adapter. i did, however, have to buy a new harness because the one from my 03 didnt work on the 05. make sure you specify that you want it for an 05 explorer. if they try to pawn one off on you thats an 03, it wont fit. good luck with the install. very nice, dependable HU with many features.
