Mounting the cd changer in the console

Hey guys, I just got an open box 6 disc clarion cd changer at best buy for like $130 and I have a clarion head unit with the ceNET thingy so all I have to do is plug it in. I would like to put it in the console. I have seen a few peoples web sites that have instructions, but unfortunately I don't remember where it was at. Can you guys tell me where to go to get instructions on how to put the changer in the center console? If you don't know of any website, could you guys tell me how to go about doing it? Thanks

Thanks for the reply, but I have a 91 and so... Anyone else have any pics or can tell me how to go about doing this or am I just gonna have to put it under the seat?

I tried it one night and it ended up being a little hard to do. You can do it it takes cutting the support for the arm rest. I did not feel like doing that so I just mounted it in the cargo area.

I mounted my Sony 10 CD changer in the console. It was a pretty big job to modify the arm rest support to fit the unit and still firmly support the arm rest.

I mounted my Sony CD Changer in the console. I cut out the diagonal section of the arm rest support bracket and strengthened the assembly with side mounting plates. These were made from sheet metal and attach at the top through the armrest mounting bolts. Stand off spacers were utilized to allow enough spacing between the two brackets. I removed the factory console insert to save in case I ever sell the Explorer. I can take my CD changer out and replace the insert.
I am getting a door jamb switch to use for installing a courtesy light in the console that will come on when the lid is opened.

I have a 97 and all I did was removed the insert in the console, there are 6 screws, and 6 bolts, then played around till I found a good fit, drilled a few holes in the insert, put it back in and then mouted the changer. On mine I only used one mounting bracket and one bolt to mount it securely, it was a snug fit. I then popped off the other parts of the console, (the cup holders and stuff) and ran the cables through there, along with a line converter for my amps. It all fit nicely. I also mounted an Equilizer in the console next to my changer.

Well, I went out and took the console out completely and I don't think that I will be putting it in the console. I would like to, but I don't want to have to cut stuff up and knowing me I would mess it up and have to go to the dealership and buy the stupid thing. I have done that too many times. Does anyone know of any other good places to mount the changer at? I don't want to have to get down on the ground to get it from under a seat or somehting, but I want a good spot to put it at. I will probably end up putting it in the rear cargo area. But suggestions are still welcome because I haven't got the thing back yet. It was a display item and so the guy told me to get the 4-year coverage for it and when I tried to get it to work it didn't so I sent it to be fixed. You would think that they would test to see if the thing worked before they went off and sold it don't you?? Oh well, I still got a good deal on it even if I did have to send it off to get it fixed, hey, maybe they'll just give me a new one??

I have a 2000 XLT now, but I have had a 91 and a 96, and the middle console is still fairly the same. I also have the very same 6 disc Clarion changer. Take the two screws out in front of the hinges. Also take the Kleenex/ change holder out, and take out the two screws there too. Now pull out the insert that has the CD holders in it, or it may be flat dependant on the year. Remove the first four CD holders completely with a sharp knife, (be carefull!) on the passenger side of the console until you have a flat surface. You will still have two to use beside it on the driver's side of the inner console. Remove the Changer bracket on the left side of the unit. Leave on the right one on, (this would be facing it right side up). Put the left side of the changer flush with the front of the inner console. Drill holes where the brackets would normally attach. ( You can replace this piece for under $25 if you decide later to not use the changer anymore) The factory screws are just long enough to go through the plastic into the changer. Now, one side is secure. Use the Factory Bracket to attach to the bottom of on the back of the inner console. Simply run your CeNet cord under your Kleenex holder slot through one of the CD holder places that has been removed. Put the piece back in, and put the four screws back in, and then the Kleenex holder. It should be a very tight fit. You will not be able to mount the changer all the way against the Passenger side wall of the inner console, because of the way the Clarion brackets are made. It leaves just enough space however to put your owners manual in to. This frees up some more space in the glove box. Good Luck! These instructions are for Explorers 95 and up. You didn't specify a year, so I hope this helps. I can talk you through the 91-94 too if you need it.

Hey Rock, I can sympathize with your problems. I spent a whole weekend trying to find a GOOD place to put a ten disc changer to no avail. I couldn't put it in the cargo area because I carry a lot of construction materials. I also thought about under the back seat but you can't fold it down if you put it there. I even tried to fit it in the jack storage area. (I was desperate.) I eventually came up with the idea of using a center console from a '95 explorer. It's got a huge storage area. I bought one from a local wrecking yard. I'm still working on the finer details but it fits great plus you get an extra power port, and two, count 'em TWO cup holders.It may be a bit drastic but some times ya gotta think out of the box. I have a '93 with the changer in the center console. Pics are located at www.jonmlceod.com/explorer.htm
I didn't put the direction up yet, but look at the tips for 30-amp service to the console for running the wires. The setup inside the console is pretty evident in the picture. The support does need to be cut, however it is aluminum and can be cut in a matter of minutes with a $4 hack saw.
