Can someone give me some advice or guidance on what I should be doing?

I'm hoping to move to California within the next 12 to 18 months. In doing so, I've tried to look up some information regarding their emission checks on their website. That's where I get a little confused. They basically say if it doesn't meet their requirements, the vehicle must be removed from the state within XX amount of days.

How do I know if my vehicle meets their requirements? The copy of my Certificate of Origin does not list "Meets CA Requirements" as I've seen on other MSO's, nor does it say it has a 50-state Emission system.

It's a 2002 Ford Explorer XLS, 4.0L SOHC V6, 4x4 with about 66000 miles on it.

Thanks!

Tim

I don't think that you will have any problems. CA is tough on CA citizens who go out of state and bring in newer vehicles. They won't let residents bring in vehicles from out of state with less than 20k (?) miles. You are suppose to register your vehicle with 30 days (60?) of moving to the state, that will require a smog check to verify that you have modified the vehicle and pass an emissions check.

I think I can help you. I just bought a '99 EB off my folks who reside in Utah. I was nervous about this issue, but quickly found by reading the sticker under the hood that I didn't need to worry. Mine says that it's 50 state legal and lists CA emissions specifically. After that I just needed a standard California smog check, fwhich is passed no problem, filled out a CA registration application and it now has CA plates.

Basically just check the sticker under the hood and make sure that it's CA emission legal and you're all set. If it's not CA legal I don't know what to tell you.

Here are a few helpful links

Hope this helps, feel free to PM me if you have futher ?'s. I'm far from an expert but I did a lot of research on this issue thinking it would be harder than it was to register an out of state Explorer.

You will be fine, is no such thing as kali legal in reality, all our exs, in oem form are built the same.
The term Kali Legal dates back to the mid 70s when all cars in kali had to have smog pumps and tank filler restrictors and run un-leaded.

Cool! Thanks everyone for the responses! I feel a little better now. :)

My daughter just brought a 2014 Ford Explorer and we noticed after everything was over with that. Does the sticker there that says California will not pass what can she do? Does she have to put a whole new emission in the car or is it something that is an easy fix I’m not understanding.
