This question is not related to explorers but I wonder....

In my town(MA), gas price is about $2.68/gal and I get around 17 mpg overall.
Fueling from New Jersey, gas price is cheaper and is about $2.49/gal, 16 mpg overall.
Fueling from New York, gas price is $2.87/gal ($3.09/gal in manhattan or NYC) and I get close to 20 mpg.
Almost the same style of driving, the same portion of highway + local driving.
All gases are 87 regular containing 10% ethanol.

I concluded that NY gas quality is the best among them.
Is it true? Seriously? Why?

It could be when the pumps click off creating a blip either way. The ethanol gas will give you worse MPG than non-ethanol though, at least in my truck it does.

It seems you get what you pay for...

Yes, you cannot compare that way because the pump may shut off a little early and short you a gallon or more.

We are up to $2.99-$3.09 here.

AGREED. I get horrible mileage with ethanol enriched gas. Also with winter gas.

x2 on winter gas

The Explorer gas tank is very sensitive to level when filling the tank.

I can get 4 more gallons in when nose down vs nose up.

If you aren't filling with the car sitting level every time, your mileage calculation won't be very accurate.
