After I accidentally damaged one of the Taylor 8mm Spiro-Pro wires leaving me with a backfiring engine and lousy idle below 2000 rpm, I then decided to give MSD's 8.5mm Super Conductor Wire set a try.

These MSD wires are advertised to have less than 50 ohms per foot of wire and after checking with a DVM, their claim did not disappoint (highest I got was 45 ohms/foot). I then decided to check my old Taylor wires for resistance and the best I can get from the 7 undamaged wires was 300 ohms per foot of wire.

It has been a few days after the MSD replacement and my V8 is idling smoothly just like it was before with the undamaged Taylor wires.

I really can't tell the difference between the two besides the lower resistance numbers on the MSD wires. The engine idles so smooth that I almost tried to restart the engine while sitting in traffic the other day thinking that the engine somehow stalled and died (I was also low on fuel).

After 165K miles, the MSD wires are the third set that I have put on this truck and I think it will last for very long time

do you have part numbers for both wire sets? when i went to one of my local speed shops asking for wires for a v8 explorer, they told me they have no listings for them

thank you. weird that msd doesnt show for a 98, but you can get for your 97. i wounder what the big difference is?

Taylor still seems to be one of the preferred wires on many forums.
The Taylor ThunderVolt 8.2 is an upgrade to the 8mm Spiro-Pro,
and just slightly more expensive. Should you decide, buy direct.
Much faster delivery as most dealers won't have them in stock.
Beautiful workmanship, got mine in five days to Hawaii. GL

The only difference is the shields on some of the spark plug boots.

You can use any of the MSD V8 wire sets for a ford 302. The shortest wire in the set is a 24" and the longest is a 37"

Part Numbers for a 1997 V8 302 Explorer/Mountaineer:

Taylor Spiro-Pro 8mm:
72022 - 8mm Spiro Pro; Ignition Wire Set; Custom Fit; cyl. 7-8 Routed To Back Of Engine; Black

72222 - 8mm Spiro Pro; Ignition Wire Set; Custom Fit; cyl. 7-8 Routed To Back Of Engine; Red

Taylor ThunderVolt 8.2mm:
82022 - 8.2mm; 40 ohm Ferrite Core Performance Ignition Wire Set; Custom Fit; cyl. 7-8 Routed To Back Of Engine; Black

82622 - 8.2mm; 40 ohm Ferrite Core Performance Ignition Wire Set; Custom Fit; cyl. 7-8 Routed To Back Of Engine; Blue

82222 - 8.2mm; 40 ohm Ferrite Core Performance Ignition Wire Set; Custom Fit; cyl. 7-8 Routed To Back Of Engine; Red

MSD Super Conductor 8.5mm Wire Sets/Universal:

1. Use any of the V8 sets with a multi-angle spark plug socket end and with the shortest wire that is no less than 24".

2. Find conversion coil end sockets on ebay or reuse you old ones. You will need to refit and crimp those on the MSD wires.

The Taylor ThunderVolt's are cheaper than any of the MSD wire sets if you buy them direct/online/retail but my neighbor had a new set just gathering dust in his garage so I opted to go with the MSD customized set. At first I thought that converting the end pieces will mess with the final resistance ratings of the wires but it did not change it at all.
