Muffler of Choice??

Well I just bought a 95 Explorer and it's time to start the transformation!!

What is the muffler of choice for everyone?

Show some pictures of how it the exhaust pipe exits if you can.

I have a Flowmaster SUV 50

Quiet at idle
nice rumble between 2 & 3k rpm
loud when you stomp on it.

I have mine exiting just under the bumper so there is no visible pipe exit.

( nothing to bang my shin on either ! )

I also have the Flowmaster 50. I really like it. It doesn't make my X sound like the monster truck it isn't, but it has a great sound when you rev the engine or are accelerating.

I just have the exhaust in the stock position [well it was in the stock position until some girl rear-ended me and shoved her cavalier where my exhaust happened to be] with a Ractive tip on it.

v8 or v6?

i have the flowmaster 40 on mine...not too noticeable in the cab, loud when i mash it, sounds good, blah blah blah.

I have had plenty of FLowmasters in the past...most likely go with the the 50 series Flowmaster. I usually bought the 40 series in the past, but I want to keep this one a little quieter.

i have a v8 but i know that if you did this set up with the same muffler on your 95 ohv it would sound straight. the muffler is the dual in dual out 2.5" magnaflow (you should stick to 2.25" pipes though- just have them welded to fit them into the holes)

Bought: 2.5" Magnaflow + resonator (NEEDED!)

Would buy: Flowie 50 series

Magnaflow here. Sounds pretty good from the outside, nice tone on the inside. It sounds best up to around 2000 rpm, anything after that it will start to sound V6y but it stills sounds good. 2.25 in pipe. Like Hokie said, a resonator might be nice. Mine resonates a bit but its not bad. It used to resonate a lot more because the pipe didn't have enough hangers on it. I took it back and got another hanger installed and it made it better. I still wonder if I would have liked the Flowmaster 50 series better. It was cheaper too. But, from what I have heard the Magnaflow gives better performance. Whatever is your preference. I really don't think you can wrong with either.

*EDIT* I will get a pic of my setup up tomorrow. It might be little dirty because I went into the mountains and the snow + lava rock they throw on the road.

I think my nasty resonance was due to the short pipe length (Sport) and the 2.5" diameter. I didn't want to get a 2.25" pipe b/c that was stock (On SOHC)

I didn't know that SOHC stock pipe was 2.25". I guess it doesn't need to be that big on an OHV.

But, what to do with that 3" exit. I mean, does that force me to do a new tail pipe? If so, ¿Do I have to buy a cat back or would it be cheaper to have a muffler shop put me in just a tail pipe?

Don't they make a 50 that doesn't have a 3" exit? They have like 2.5" and 2.25" I assume.

Ah, I see. Is this what you are looking at http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster/524703.html Thats the bolt on setup Flowmaster makes for your explorer, and I see it has a 3" out. Well, that is definitely cheaper then what I got quoted for 2.25" 50 series custom at a muffler shop. They wanted $275. I see your dilemma now. Hmmm. Well I sure something could be fabricated up to go from 3" to 2.5". You may be able to buy an adpater to go from 3" to 2.5" but I don't know if that would be the best move. Someone with more expertise should step in and give a chime.

i got my flowmaster 40 muffler, new 2.5" piping, and 2.5" stainless tip installed for less than $200. Shop around and you can probably get the price down to how much you want to spend. You can even buy the muffler you want online or wherever, and most shops will install it for you.

just wanting to shove a new muffler into your current pipes? depending on how drastic the size difference is, someone can weld it in for you with little thought...but might affect performance and such
