I got this put on sometime last winter. Nov-Jan. It was a V-Force or something like that... basically a Flowmaster 40 duplicate since they lost their patent for a year or something like that. But anyways - I looked at a pic I took of my underside and couldn't believe how rusty it had gotten. Should I be concerned with this?

Incase you're wondering - it was suppose to be dual exhaust but because of my spare tire they couldn't route the other pipe. They just blocked off the 2nd outlet on the muffler incase some day I decided to ditch the spare (which I'm going to do this summer) and get a 2nd pipe put in.

My Flowmaster has a little surface rust on it but not much. It's hard to see from your pic how bad yours is. You never know what a knock off is made out of.

Side note: I don't really think it's good for exhaust flow to just plug one of the holes in a single in/dual out muffler.

Wow.. should've gone with FM! The rust on my OEM wasn't even that bad!

I have an off brand 40 series sound-a-like and it survived the PA winter with hardly any rust on it. Just wish my pipes for it were the same.

I got a Stainless steel magnaflow, so i have no rust issues even with the salty winter it has endured. That looks bad for just one winter.

If you ever decided to go dual in the future. I think its worth to spend money again on buying the right muffler. From the looks of it after just one winter that thing would fall off after next winter.

*note to self: do not buy V-Force.*

What about the piping? Should there be that much rust on the piping? The outlet is also rusting up... which doesn't look good at all =/

It depends if the piping is made from aluminum or stainless steel. From the looks of it, yours is aluminum.

Piping is made of those cheap pipe that you get from Autoparts store. A reputable muffler shop uses thicker gauge pipe that does not rust through as fast. When I got mine done (other car) I gave the shop a pipe that I bought from AutoZone and told them to use it to by pass where the muffler used to be and they did the rest using their own piping. After six months the cheap pipe from AutoZone was all covered in rust while the rest were only rusted in very few spots. I had to go back and told them to change this part and use their own.

Well, there is Stainless steel, Aluminized steel, and steel. You probably just have steel, because I have aluminized, and it made it through the winter without a bit of rust. We have a lot of salt where I live too.

X~Factor- I agree 100%. My friend used cheap pipe, and it is already rusted completely after one winter.

It is worth the extra money for rust prevention, so get a decent muffler.

At the time I had no clue about different types or rust prevention... if only I could go back in time =/
