Ok, here we go.

1. Is the front driveshaft supposed to be able to be rotated by hand 1/4 - 1/2 inch. The rear does not rotate at all.

2. At about 60 mph when going up a hill, there is a clunking noise right before, during, and for a little bit after the downshift. What's going on here? It can be felt through the floor.

3. If I have the throttle in a specific range, there is a hissing/sucking noise that can be heard. The 'tone' of the noise can be changed by moving the accelerator, and it is only heard in a small range of throttle position. It can be duplicated more easily if the overdrive is off.

4. When I was lookin' around on the truck today to see if I could figure any of this out, I noticed that there was a buzzing/winding noise when I shut off the truck. It lasted for a few seconds, was repeatable, and it seemed like it was coming from somewhere around the intake.

Hopefully I explained all of these clearly but let me know if you need any more details. My Ex is a 98 SOHC XLT 4WD.

Thanks to those that help.

Hey Snoop. Know what I'm sayin' yo?

Here 'da shizzo on the izzo:

1. It's normal fo' da driveshaft to move a little. It's called play yo. Know what im sayin'? Da back driveshaft should have some some izze too.

2. Shizzolate dat yo!

3. Check for a vacuum leak. Das the Shiznit, yo.

4. See #3 yo. Explorers are da bomb sez Snoop Doggy Dogg!

:D

River.. are you drunk already? It's only 7:55.

#3 Might be your IAC too. I'd try cleaning it.

Sorry dude. I had the Shizzolator on. Yeah check the IAC too. Its known to make a whistle / hissing sound.

Ha. That is awesome! Shizzolated my website! Kick ass man. :D

OK.

So there's no problem with the front driveshaft, but what about the rear? It doesn't move at all when I try to turn it by hand.

What about the clunking? Sorry, I don't understand Shizzlese.

I'll check the IAC, and for vacuum leaks after that.

I checked the IAC, and its within spec eletrically, and I cleaned as much of the carbon out as I could with a rag.

I was unable to test the results though, because it's been raining here, and I can't hear the noise because of it. I'll try again when the roads are dry.

How do you do a vacuum leak test? I've never done one of these before, but I am fairly knowledgeable about the basics of engines, so I think it shouldn't be a problem once I get going.

the vac test I was talking about is just listening for a vacuum leak around the engine. Some guys use propane.

Best. Post.Ever! :D

To check for a vacuum leak you can also get a can of EFI or carb cleaner and spray it in the area of the suspected leak. If the motor revs up then you have a leak. Works with propane too but it will not make as noticeable a rev as with cleaner. It's easier to spray and concentrate onto an area for pinpoint checks. It's wonderful ****. :)

No Section 525, RiverRat is not drunk...
