Will a traction lock differential from a mustang GT work in my X?
I'm thinking aobut using one the the rear, and maybe one in the front.

No and no. The front diff is completely different and more than like the mustang LS is 28 spline while the explorer diff have 31 spline axles.

okay, thanks.
how can I upgrade my front with a ls. I want it to be from a salvage yard or something. I need to save money for my girls birthday.

no explorer's where ever available with ls up front, i don't think they put ls in rangers either. you're pretty much going to have to go with something aftermarket.

what about other trucks? like the expedition? or the F150? or the Bronco II? I know they didn't put the 8.8 in the Explorer only.
What about a front end swap with an axle from another vehicle? Like an F150 or Expedition. I would rather do that anyway. Find something that came stock with 4.10 or 4.56 and/or an LS or locker.
I was thinking of putting a rear axle from an F150. I don't mind welding and cutting. I think this could be easy. Any info?
But the front gives me trouble. I don't know enough about the ends and outs of 4x4s.
I thought as long as it was the right spline count it would work. Is this not right?
Thanks for the input by the way. I almost bought two on ebay.

IFS isnt interchangeable without some serious fabwork.... each setup is designed around one platform.

a 90-94 explorer is interchangeable with a 90-97 ranger.
a 95-02 explorer is interchangeable with 98+ ranger.

some of te ranger FX4's came with 4.56 gears and all of the FX4's had a rear torsen limited slip. No ranger, bronco, or explorer has ever come with a factory front axle traction aid so you will have to go aftermarket.

Just curious why dont oyu want to throw down the same amount of cahs you would on a junkyard part and get a new ring and pinoin combo with master install kit, and a locker. Most junkyards arent gonna want to sell just he carrier so you will have to buy the entire axle adn that will run you well over 200$ so you could have bought the ring and pinon each time you buy a junk axle and had money left over to put toward a locker.

that's a good point. I was really only thinking of swaping out the rear for a 9". I was hoping that there was a truck out there I could pull the front from to save money.
My girlfriend's birthday is coming up, and I want to do something really nice. So I don't have a ton of cash I can throw at my X right now.
The trouble with that is, in January, I am driving it up to Yellow Stone for two weeks of wheeling, hiking, and camping. So I have to get alot done to it before then so I can keep up with my buddy that has lived there for the last year and has set up his truck to handle the terrain.
The X has a D35 right? wasn't that used in some Dodge trucks?

it isnt the same axle... dodge trucks use a D35c center section while ours is the standard d35HP center.

well that just sucks.
Thanks for all the information. This board has saved me $$ again.

If It was me, I would get the love of my life some flowers (married 25 yrs).
And get myself an aftermarket locker, remember, guys do not live as long as women.
Thus we deserve more stuff :D

what about the rear end of a 95 T-bird rear-end, is that 28 spline?

its an 8.8 3.27 limited slip

That is a IRS 8.8 isn't it?

ALL car 8.8s are 28 spline.
