My 1997 with a 302 keeps shutting off.

I have a 97 302 with 170,000 k,that on occasion just quites sometimes not for months. If it stops i try to start it about 5 tmes and it just dies instantly. Then finally it will just run as normal. One time i went in a store came out and same thing as above. Very erratic and not often. Where should i begin?? Thanks Bob

Welcome to the forum. The first thing I would suspect is that the IAC ( idle air control) valve is having an intermittent problem. Have you tried pushing the gas pedal to try and start it when there is a problem. After that I would suspect a fuel pump, or maybe a coil pack.

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't know electric fuel pumps could nbe intermitent. I'm a dinosuar still thinking about the mechanical pumps Thanks again
