My 1999 engine died

this is my first post I am pleased I was referred to this site
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer UQ XLT 5 speed auto 6 cylinder Unleaded Multi-point injected 4.0L (4011cc)

On friday I was driving in the country side late and through pouring rain- The car dramatically lost oil pressure then it surged back again- then lost pressure again. I was in the middle of nowhere- the car struggled to the next town- When I gently drove it to a mechanic the next morning - the engine just gave up. Couldnt re start The Mechanic drained some oil and after inspecting - felt its either the timing chain or bearing due to the metalic texture to the oil- and evidence of fragments in the oil.

Told me that to diagnose the problem it would involve taking the engine out - stripping it down- which would be costly -and recommended that it might be more cost efficient to replace it with a second hand one as new ones here are very costly to recondition or rebuild Suggested I also think about whether its even worth it.

I loved my Explorer - so want to replace the engine. Im looking for advice as to the best way to go

Being the weekend here- I havent been able to source a second hand motor- I did go to look at a 1998 second hand Explorer quest which had SOHC 4.OL- When I drove it it seemed to lack the pick up / power of my truck and made me lament on my car -which I really do want to have back on the road

There is a company advertising new Explorer
4.0L Long Engine V6 OHV- which is above my budget -

I would like to know exactely the engine I should be looking for- ? and would be grateful of some advice

Sounds like you have an SOHC that had a typical timing chain break. If you have an SOHC in your 99 you will need to replace it with a like SOHC, The OHV motor has a different computer and wiring harness.

so the 98 Quest -( im not familiar with the Quest ) has the same engine as the 99 XLT ?
Asked the question as my car (1999) seemed to have more pick up/power
 






The Quest isn't/wasn't a model in the States so it's hard to say. The engine cover in my vehicle says OHC on it, so that makes it plain. The OHC engine is much more powerful, but has a little less low-end grunt. The OHC would definitely win the drag race.

Look around this forum for VIN decoding to see if that will tell you the engine.

[Edit: According to my shop manual, the eighth digit of the VIN is the engine code: X for the 4 L OHV (pushrod) engine, E for the OHC and P for the 5 L V-8.]

No difference. The S is for single.
 






replacing a OHS with OHV

The OHV engine was the less expensive option when new and is only 160 horsepower compared to 205 for the OHC. The automatic transmission is set up a little differently for the OHC, with a higher stall speed to the torque converter. It's possible that you'd find its performance disappointing comparatively.

noticed that the OHC is either 119kw or 153kw

as mine is with the mechanic- out in the countryside is there a way I can determine which one it is?

My main reference is the 98 Quest which ive found is a XL - which is either a 119 or 153 - as it seemed to lack the same power- im assuming it was a 119kw and mine is a 153kw

does that seem like resonable logic??

In my experience, the 119 kW (160 hp) figure is only applicable to the OHV engine--not the OHC.

Can anyone advise me- just prior to the engine giving out -re timing chain or bearing - I noticed the O/D light flashing. I had a sudden oil pressure drop - which kicked back in then dropped again.

My question is -now that I have found a replacement engine- from a 98 limited - I am wondering if when changed over- if ill then encounter transmission problems- re : the O/D flashing light - or whether this was a for warning of things to come with the engine.

Not much you can do in the middle of nowhere in the pouring rain

Anyway - I love the car- but need to think practically
should I replace the engine - and assume the O/D flashing light - would be fixed as well- or ?

You know what, I also experienced that before and I don't have any choice but to spend much money. Why don't you ask the mechanic about the engine that will fit to your car? I'm sure he knows about it. Sorry for my stupid idea, I don't think if it will help you.
