Its clearly a paint stick at first glance. Round the edges, and add a couple more coats of paint to de-red-neck-it a little.

Looks pretty good! My only concern is that if you pull something out, like luggage and it catches on the wood, will it tear out the entire switch? That switch does not look cheap. Some Ford engineer/designer making about 80k spent a lot of time designing it. I thought about permanently mounting the case but then decided that I like the ability for it to tear off. If a stroller, snowboard, mountain bike or luggage accidently catches on it when I'm yanking it out, it will simply come off. I'll just retape it. I also own a bottle of Goo Gone. That stuff is fantastic for taking off any sticky goo from tape, price tags on glass, etc--even year old grey tape residue.

De-redneck it. LOL

A little sanding sealer to give it that smoother surface before painting would help.

I wonder how a small piece of matte black acrylic would look?

That is an awesome idea! I just got my 2012 Explorer (Limited) for almost a year now and I accidentally hit hose buttons a couple of times when loading stuff in the back. The 3rd row seat started to squeeze my stuff! Ford needs to put a cover on these buttons! I have a few pet peeves that they shld address:
- The dial for the "Terrain Mgmt system" in the center console. They need to make it out-of-reach for children. I didn't know my 2yr old son was playing with it and I drove for an hour using the Snow setting in a sunny day!
- The buttons below the Touch screen. It so sensitive, with just a soft touch it turn on my AC.
- The power fold for the bucket seats 92nd row). It folds on once and it slams way to hard!
- The 2 front column pillars are way too huge. I really need to make sure that there are no passing cars when crossing an intersection. At times, it can block your view. Do you guys identify any other annoyances??

And, Move the emergency flasher switch away from the center screen. I rest my hand on that as I press the icons on the screen and many times turn on the emergency flashers!

- As to the first point, are you saying that your 2 year old is playing with the dial while you are driving?? From my understanding, the only way the TMS can be changed is when the accessory mode is on or the vehicle is running. Everytime you start the Explorer, the mode automatically defaults to Normal, regardless of what poistion it was in before.
- As for the other concern, I guessing that the reason the front pillars are that size is that they also act to keep the roof from collapsing in the case of a roll over. The Explorer is not exactly a light vehicle. But like I said, that is only a guess.

From what I've read in various threads, one of the big annoyances is that the interior lights do not have switches that allow you to turn them off.
