My 2001 Explorer is hesitating in 4x4 auto only.

I have a 2001 Explorer which has started to Thump in 4x4 auto only. The rev counter is fine and engine runs smoothly. It is almost like the brakes are applied heavily then let go. It goes through periods of being fine over say 10 km and then it will start again. If I switch to 4x4 High it immediately stops. If i push 4x4 auto it starts again as soon as I push the button.

My niece has similar trouble with her '96. (after 3 trips back to dealer who sold it to her, it still has the issues). Another wrench monkey said its a problem with the transfer case (something about a solenoid or some crap) I'll try to remember after my second cup of coffee lol. In the mean time though, try to run a search here on this forum if you haven't done so. These guys are a knowledgeable and good bunch of people.
