My 2001 Ford Explorer will not start (but it cranks).

Thanks for the compliment on the truck ! I also had no idea about the PCV system.I mean i have taken the cap off while running and it has no pressure in the valve cover at all.I figured it would be safe.I have decided i am going to go with a complete delphi pump assembly.MY sending unit is slow to respond during fills and with the bad motor i figured its best.I can get the whole delphi unit for 138$ from amazon and it has good reviews.

I Also watched a youtube video of a guy with the same problems as me and read reviews and the new assembly seemed to cure most peoples problems.

I am also going to replace the pressure regulator.I noticed that napa has like 3 different units and they seem to vary in PSI.Like 39-41 PSI depending on what one. What should i get ??? a lower psi or higher psi ?

For the return-type fuel system (like yours) the fuel pressure is supposed to be around 37 PSI. A few PSI one way or the other shouldn't make any difference. The pressure doesn't remain constant while driving anyway.

Be sure to let us know if repairs make an improvement to your issue.

It might be a few weeks as its a expensive repair and i will have to get it scheduled in.

If this doesn't fix the problem, well i guess i wouldn't be surprised lol.My mechanic seemed to think the pcm was bad but i doubt it.However if the issue is not fixed after fuel system repairs then i will go try his way and get the pcm replaced.

I just would think a bad pcm wouldn't work at all or would have no communications with a scan tool.I mean how could you drive a car daily with a bad pcm ?

I don't think it's the PCM. That sounds like a mechanic cop-out to me.

Oh man i couldn't agree with you more ! He kept the vehicle for a week and couldn't figure it out and when i came to get it, he says,We back probed your pcm harness and checked your Crankshaft position sensor and wiring and found no problems. Then he's like well.......ya know we kinda think its your pcm and its maybe having intermittent failure.I was like hmmmmmm i have seen pcm failure before. It either looses all communication from obd2 port or dies completely.I dont think i am missing anything in that judgement.

He said he tested fuel pressure and it was fine. But it primes and drops as you hear 2 clicks up front. It must be a relay that clicks and something else. The first click the pressure is higher ! then 2nd click it drops like 10 psi.I think that is normal behavior. Its like the pump primes and clicks off and then a relay clicks and the pressure drops.I am sure you have herd this double click up front when the system primes.

Spark plugs, plug wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, a can of starting fluid. Had this problem and thats what fixed it for me.. if youre really against doing the pump try the others (they are regular maintenance you should be doing anyways) but if your fuel pump is shot and clogged up with gunk its gonna push it through and definitely wreck the new filter and probably foul out the plugs and possibly harm the new wires.. and for the record because the height of the truck the fuel pump is pretty damn easy to replace.. put a floor jack under the gas tank and lower it down swap out the pump assembly and put it all back..

If every time you have a no-start condition, you can "jiggle" the inertia switch and then it starts, it sure sounds like the inertia switch is bad. Brooklyn Bay has the right idea to see if you have continuity thru the switch next time you have a no-start. You will have to be careful that you don't jiggle the switch while you are testing, however. Another idea is to rig up a jumper wire around the inertia switch and leave it disconnected. Then, next time it doesn't start, connect the jumper - if the truck then starts, you have confirmed the switch as the problem.
Where is the inertia switch located on the 05 explorer? Please, I can get a reply to my threads could you ointment me in the right direction?

They are usually located behind the passenger's side kick panel, but I'm not sure if that's where it is in your model. Maybe somebody else with that model could verify this or you could check behind the panel to see if it's there.

Spark or fuel. Which one are you missing? If it's not one of these two things you might have a serious problem.
