I would look underneath the vehicle and make sure there are no fluid leaks like oil, transmission fluid, etc. I had some transmission fluid leaking during my warranty and they replaced the transmission gasket and also found an axle seal leaking and they replaced that also...for free! So make sure everything is dry underneath.
If you plan on keeping it, the Ford extended warranty is a good idea. I'd also check wheel bearings and ball joints. Possibly take it in for a service soon so they can check it over.
How much is the extended warranty and can you get it after the manufacture warranty is up?
My '05 explorer is about to hit 39k. Recently was told the transfer case is leaking (although I never see any sign of it on the garage floor). I need to get it into the dealer to have them check it out.
Make sure to check the rear coils for cracks. I had both mine crack, but I had the extended warranty so I was covered. Sounds like more and more people are reporting it.
