hello all and thank you for takin the time to read this post. when i am driving my explorer sport 98, usually only after driving on the highways doesnt happen in the city driving often but this is what happens, i will be driving at say 80-90 kms/hr then when i come to a stop sign or a red light it will sometimes stall out on me when i stop then i have to turn it off and restart it. any idea what this may be? i am no truck expert and have no idea why this is happening but i do believe it is gonna be somethin major that wont be cheap :( please help me out thank you :exp:

is there anyone out there that has some idea of whats causing this issue? im hoping to get it fixed before it causes any further damage

My guess would be the Idle Air Control valve. The IAC is a common part to replace. It will often cause stalling after letting off of the gas, and sometimes causes an intermittant humming/buzzing sound. The sensor is under $50 and can be replaces with two tork bolts in about 5 minutes. Some IAC's are cleanable, while some are sealed from the factory. It is on the the intake tube near the throttle body and is a small cylinder with a plug going into it.

wow thank you sooo much i hope thats what it is!!

Welcome to the site by the way. :bounce: If you need pics a search will turn up some.

Ya know, I replaced my IAC not three months ago, and now I've got the same issue. Weird.....
Karl

thank you sooooo much for the help i did the check and saw the pics of the iac on there so i will look into that but im wondering after reading a lot of the posts where people were saying they had problems with starting and what not i only have the issue of stalling out after driving for awhile at speeds of 80km or more then stopping but when im in the city driving it doesnt happen is this still an iac problem ? also i havent had mine too long maybe 3-4 months it has 245k km on it are there some things i should be lookin at doin? probably a tune up wouldnt hurt right? anything else this is my first truck usually i have cars that are newer and way less km on them and a warranty lol! :D

I've had 2 bad IAC valves and neither had troubles starting, and both seemed aggravated by long periods of throttle, with a sudden drop off to idle.

the other possibility is an O2 sensor.
I had the same problem with my Bronco2, it did fine in the city, but after drivin 15 miles at 65mph, when I came to a stop it would try to die. Turned out to be the O2 then.
But yeah, the IAC is the cheaper of the 2.
Try scanning for codes, to see if anything pops up.

Would either of these throw a CEL? I'm 99% sure a bad O2 sensor would.
I'm not getting one.....
Karl

a bad o2 can throw a CEL but isn't always detected by computer diagnostics (the CEL light wont be on consistently). The IAC will leave the CEL on. Either the IAC or the o2 sensor should cost less than $60 to replace yourself. It may also be a vacuum leak or an exhaust leak so don't count those higher-dollar issues out just yet. Best of Luck,

~stu

I replaced the IAC on my truck recently, becaue the idle was rough. The IAC fixed it. Never had a CEL.
Same with my Bronco2 and the O2 sensor.. never through a CEL, but replacing the O2 made a world of a difference.

i everyone and thanks for all the help it is so cool to find a site like this that can help out the mechanically challenged like me :D i was wondering how do i get my codes read?

Had the same problem with a 93 Tempo I had. Turned out to be a bad fuel pump. Hearing any loud whining while the truck is idling? That was the first thing I noticed before the stalling started.

a local autozone or schmucks generally will scan the codes for free... if they won't give you the meaning of the codes, atleast get the numbers and we can help you out

ok thanks i will look for the nearest autozone and get the codes read

try checking your air sensor if its dirty jus clean it should get better i use to have that problem on my 99 explorer

They also have these code reading things that you can buy at walmart or from an automotive magazine or catalog. I've never used one but I know people who have. The cheapest ones just have blinking lights. The expensive ones are liquid crystal displays. You can also find free documentation on how to interprit the codes and what the blinking lights mean for each model vehicle, I can't remember where i've seen it online, but it was while searching for engine swap stuff. The best thing to do in any situation is to realize how bad we neglect our vehicles maintenance, and when you get it fixed, you should do a complete tune-up, spark plugs, ignition, air-fuel-oil-filters, oil change, and rotate your tires.

ya, i have the same howling problem, it seems to slow the ex down from 0-25 too. seems like you have to step on the gas more to get it goin. does this happen to you guys and does it affect hp at low speeds? thanks

I had that humming noise also, and one of our "AWESOME" members told me what the problem was! It is the AIC, I just replaced mine yesterday and that woooooo noise is gone! and it idles perfect now, not that I had noticed any idle problems at all before I just had that woooo noise, but after replacing the IAC I did notice a much smoother idle. Here is a link one of our members sent me, it is a video with audio of that noise, I freaked out when I saw this and heard it, because it solved my problem. Thank you so much for that video by the way, it really did fix my explorer! :)
