2001 Explorer Limited
I was driving to PA to look at another explorer that I was going to buy, when this happened. Started in the left lane, and ended up in the ditch. Truck hit and flipped over, landing on its side. I got the pictures started after they had flipped it back over.

Its totalled, which is too bad, as I really liked this truck.

that sux ur x got totalled so what u going to be driving now

so did u get the limited

I don't understand how it's totaled? Looks like it could be fixed up..

Rollovers are usually pretty much automatic for totals.. Usually the insurance company will total if the cost of repairs exceeds 75% of the value of the vehicle.

Ah, understood.. I was thinking along the lines of it being damaged to the point of no return.. but I'm sure it'll be a good parts truck.

Good luck with your future next truck. Glad you're okay, this could have been much worse.

Looks like the truck held up pretty well, not a single broken window, or bone. =)

Yeah, both airbags went off, when it was on its side, I could tell the front suspension was pretty messed up, the front was bent up at an angle from hitting the ground.

In addition, the entire side is mangled, and the roof was dimpled.... I knew it was totalled as soon as I got out of it.

Its too bad..

I am picking up the limited this Saturday.

I was surprised by this too, not broken windows. I've driven Ford for a long time, and though this is my first major accident, my brother did flip a Bronco II, and was basically not injured either.

I know the explorer's are not the highest rated on crash ratings and such, but I do have to say that the truck did its job, and saved me from serious injury.

It did start at the salvage place when I was getting my stuff out of it, and the tires were pretty much new, so anyone in Erie Pa might be able to get themselves a nice SOHC motor at least :)

I'm also bummed since I just changed the plugs, which is a pain, and put new shocks on the front. New ball joints, controls arms, etc within the last couple months.

At least I know how to fix them :)

Built ford tough anyone? IFS sucks when holding up to this kind of stuff... one of the major downfalls of the 2nd gens... but seriously dude... that truck saved your life... man.. i'm amazed in the fact the roof didn't bend even a bit.. I love these trucks.

What was it like going through that?

I think the conditions played more of a role than anything else. Often times those offramps & onramps are the worst spots. The highway crews sometimes can't just keep up with conditions. Hell here we had a 5 car pileup on a ramp when it snowed. Most drives are under a fall sense of security with SUVs and snow/ice/etc. They think 4wd means it can go anywhere but they don't realize 4wd doesn't mean it'll stop when you want it to.

Not sure what IFS is, could you clarify?

Going through it was not too bad, I started in the left-most lane on I90. I was driving along in 2wd when the back slid out to the right. I tried to turn into the skid, and ended up going sideways down the road, traveling at a 45 degree angle, till the front of the truck went into the ditch and dug in. I think that is when the airbags went off, and the truck cartwheeled.

The guy behind me stopped and helped me out through the moon-roof.

There were at least 5 other spin-outs, one rear-end collision, and a guy who hit a traffic sign all in that same area. The road was fine one minute, bad the next, and clear 25 minutes later.

I also cannot believe that none of the windows blew out, or that the truck was not more obviously bent up. If you walked around it you could tell it was pretty bad, since the lift gate was bent and wouldn't open right, etc. but from the passenger side you would never know.

That is true to an extent. I was only going around 35-45 miles per hour when this happened. I was driving with plenty of distance between me and the other vehicles, when my back wheels started to skid. I actually think that if I had been in 4WD mode, I might not have slid like I did, and would have been ok. I've lived in the snow belt my entire life, and never take the snow for granted. Sometimes, these things will happen no matter what you try to do to prevent them though :(

shame.. I love sports....

Me too. I had that truck for 7 years, it was great, had an aerostar before it. Pretty zippy truck, only had a little rust on the bumper and lift-gate, that I was planning on fixing.

Plus it looked pretty cool :)

i fixed mine for a couple hundred bucks and it was worse off than that one :) fix it man

I'm not sure I could, the frame is bent in two places, and I know of no way to straighten it. I did not just roll the truck, I hit the ground head on, then flipped it.

It is hard to tell from the pic's but the frame was definitely bent at the front, and the pillars were also screwed up. I am not sure I can tackle that kind of repair.

Without looking at it more, I know that the drivers side suspension was messed up pretty bad, just those parts, plus the body work, and tires is more than a few hundred bucks.

It might be fixable, but I don't have the time to invest, and need a vehicle for work.

Mike

The insurance company took care of me and gave me what the truck was worth.

Wow...

That sucks- love that color combo on your old Sport. But hey- beautiful Limited! Nice find on the forum, glad you're ok!

Wow, that looked like it was pretty serious. Glad to see you were ok. I had something similar happen to me years ago, but I was in a car and didn't roll over. However, the car was pretty impacted into the ditch.

Glad I don't have to worry about the snow down here in Florida, although the drivers are more the worry...

Looked like a crazy ride. Too bad it happened or you'd have two Explorers. Hope the new one treats you as good as it treated me.
