My car broke down

I have a 2013 Explorer..........While stopped at a red light my car began to shake; I pulled into a gas station and the low oil pressure light came on followed by the car shutting off. I got oil to put into it and it started back up, I drove about 3 minutes down the road, and it shut off again and this time would not start back up, I checked the oil stick, and it was chunky which I have never seen before. I ended up having to have it towed.

Does anyone know what could be wrong and how to fix it and why the oil was chunky?

Did it look the color of a chocolate milkshake? If so then you probably have one of the V6 3.5L engines with an internal water pump and the seal in the water pump failed, getting coolant into the oil, which wrecks the engine's lubrication and the chunks were either some sort of curdling or pieces of engine metal sheared off into the oil.

There's a few topics about this issue in the forum, but in summary, once the damage is bad enough to keep the engine from running, there's no *fix* for that, the damage is already done most likely. Even if it were the 4 cylinder ecoboost engine with a head gasket leak, if that got coolant in the oil, or even if it was just low on oil for whichever possible reason and then the oil got to a chunky state, again the outcome is the same, lack of lubrication resulting in a trashed engine.

It now probably needs an engine replacement. Sorry for your loss. What was the mileage on it?

It wasn't like a milkshake, my children's dad said when he dropped the pan the oil that came out was not chunky but nasty looking. It has 208,000 miles on it. he is going to try and do an oil change and clean it out and then try to unlock the engine over the weekend.

My children's dad did an oil change and the car is starting up but shutting back off when he goes to drive it. It is throwing out the codes for a Bad crank shaft position sensor and misfire in cylinders 1, 2 and 3
 






I'd say usually when there's a misfire on an entire bank, the timing chain tends to be responsible.

Is your coolent level where it should be when the engine is cold?

So OP like others have said I am thinking it is the issue with the coolant in the oil. Milkshake refers to the oil having a brown kind of milky look to it and the chunky part may be pieces of engine in there. Also the misfiring bank may be related as the water pump is connected to the timing chain. Check your coolant levels as posted. My previous explorer died for this very reason, water pump issue where it leaks into the engine and into the oil pan. Mine would also start up and run for a short time and then it would died again. Good luck and hopefully it's not a dead engine.
