my cheap offroad lights in bumper

was at autozone the other day and saw some offroad lights for $40 and decided to try them out in the bumper. wasnt as hard as i thought it would be, just measured a few times and drilled 2 holes above where the opening is in the front of the bumper so i could get my hand in there for the nuts. ran the wiring through the grill to the starter solenoid and then ran the wires into the cab by drilling a hole in the firewall and mounted the switch next to the parking brake release. they work better than i thought they would.

I got some projector fogs from autozone, but am a little dissapointed with them... they are like once of my ex-girlfriends... small and nice looking but not too bright ;-)

the projector is setup to shoot to wide too... now I'm thinking about getting just some driving lights and splice the wiring into the existing cables, that way i can turn on both with the same switch... I don't know is the wiring will be tough enough for that or if i need to get another fuse/relay, etc.

Sorta gives you the bug to do something when the temp. gets above 40 deg. in the winter months.
rama1200, I know what you mean about the small projectors. More for looks than use. I have just about decided that; the smaller the light the less the output. Projectors just seem to put out less light than reflectors of the same size.

thanks guys, it turned out a lot better than i thought it would and there holding in position too, thought they would come loose but i got them good and tight. i was curious to see how much they help so i put my brights on and then flipped the switch, it didnt seem brighter but lit up way further foward and off to the side a lot, im pleased

oh and i have to give props to the silverstar headlight bulbs, i love them! now if i can just get them to last longer than they did on my camaro :/

yeah... I think I'll open mine and see if the bulb is 55w... not sure... I think it might be lower... don't know what the standardt wattage for foglites is... I think I've seen 35w... I think a 55w bulb should improve a little bit (if it is not already there)...

Bill do you still have some projectors on your x? what brand are/were they? do you have any pics??

man i was just at walmart and they had a set of hella 500s with the stone guards for like $62. didnt know they sold them there or i woulda got that. ill have to pick them up sometime im sure ill want to install them somewhere, maybe have 4 lights up front if i can mount it.

I don't understand why people buy those cheapo lights, when you can get the Hella 500s (55 watt) at local auto parts stores for 20 bucks more. Oh well, looks good anyway.

I just bought some no name brand Wal-Mart fog lights for $16.56... included 2 H3 lights with rock guards, covers, all wiring including fuse and on/off switch... heres my questions:
1) they came with mounting brackets and bolts but I can't find a spot to install them... can I drill into the stock bumper on a 1994 XLT? Its the shiney chrome one?
2) If not, can someone reccommend a spot to mount them?
3) How long/ easy was the install? I am a novice, but I understand the basics of how the wiring goes.
4) Since I am a novice, what is the difference with using a relay? or just wiring them to the battery with an inline fuse?

1)yes, that's what this thread is about

2)anywhere you want to drill holes will also work, I'm planning on mounting 3 on the roof rack.

3)very easy, should have a wiring diagram and the wires should already have terminals on them for "plug and play". I never use the premade harnesses though, because the lengths of wires is never right.

4)A relay may be needed depending on the power of the lights. For 2 55Watt lights a relay is definitely not needed. For 2 100 W lights...probably should. The relay allows a power wire to run from the battery to the relay to the lights, thus not travelling the entire path into the cab of the vehicle, through the switch, and back to the lights. If you use 12-14 gauge wires and switches that can support the power (30 amp switches), you don't really need the relay. Basically, if the kit doesn't come with a relay, don't use one, if it does, use it.
