Its when the idle rate is irratic, up, down, up, down, up, down....

Yeah, it doesn`t idle steady, it`s not like it really revs up and down or anything, just kind of lopes within a small rpm range. (it`s not my A/C either if that`s what yer thinkin`)

I`m putting in the new O2 sensors on friday, so we`ll see what happens.

I don`t have any paint thinner in the garage, and I`m not sure how much additives we have in the Vancouver lower mainland to combat cold. It doesn`t get real cold around here, so we would be on par with Seattle for weather, I would think.
You never know though, maybe there`s something to it.
Might even be something to do with the larger catback exhaust I put on last year maybe affecting the cat somehow.

I have always been taught that a sulfur smell means that you are running lean. One explanation that I found is that the combustion temps are not doing a complete burn. Here is something I found on the net:During normal combustion, the chemistry of the catalyst can change due to driving conditions. The ingredient responsible for the odor is hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The existence of H2S comes from gasoline during the combustion process. This process is considered normal, and is more noticeable with a CLEAN/LEAN running engine, like Hondas and Toyotas.
NOTHING can be done to prevent this, it is more likely to be noticable with a new vehicle due to the high efficiency of the cat converter.

Do a search on the web for running lean sulfur smell and you will be amazed at all the possibilities:eek:

Well I swapped the O2 sensors, cleaned my plugs a little, they looked good, actually, and cleaned my IAC.
I don`t really notice the smell as much and the idle seems to have improved a little, but it still has the odd shake here and there. I`m going to leave it at that.

smell like turpentine??

I just recently bought a '01 Explorer, and I live in Iowa, it's been really cold here lately. This morning it was -10 degrees and I get that turpentine smell also. And yes it doesn't seem as bad on warmer days. I thought that it might have something to do with it's a California vehicle, with their tougher emission contols?? What do you think?
