96' Ford Explorer XLT
Hey,

I think that I have some major problems with my 96' Explorer! ME and 4 other people were driveing up this trail yesterday and I decided to turn around, to park, once we got to the top. Well when I put the explorer in reverse...Nothing happened.... So I tried 1,2, and D, but still nothing happened.

So, I put it in Neutral and switch the 4wd off (to 2wd) and try the same process again, but still nothing happened. Then I put the car into park, and when I do that I hear a strange noise. Sounds like something spinning and making a really fast "tik, tik, tik, tik" sound.

I checked for tranny fluid to have leaked out, and it was good. Crawled under the car to look for something un-ordinary, but still didnt see anything. I did notice that the "O/D Off" Light was flashing on and off.
I pretty sure this is going to be something serious.... I just had the tranny rebuilt over the summer, and I have put 10,000 miles on it since then.

Has anyone ever had a problem like this???

Thanks,
kendal

your transmission is more than likely fine, its your transer case thats the problem, that ticking noise you heard was your transmission park gear, in other words, your transfercase is stuck in neutral, causing your transmission to feel like its in nuetral, which its not, its probably the motor in the transfer case thats has gone bad or a bad connection to it or something, but from what i've read those things go out all the time..........

As far as I know the control-crack t-cases dont have nuetral. I suppose its possible its caught between gears. What you can do is pull off the shift motor and try shifting it manually with some pliers.

Yes they do. Pull the T-case motor off, and right inbetween the HI and LO positions is Neutral. I should have taken pictures of it, before I sold it.

lol i ditched my control trac t-case a couple of months ago for a 1354 manual shift. one of the best things ive done on the truck.

I hear that! :D Mines been gone for quite awhile. I don't miss it at all.

Awesome, That does sound like it could be the problem.
I went to Disney, OK to a 4x4 park earlier in the day and my T-case was making some strange noises.

It would make a bunch of pop sounds (Only when the front wheels started to spin and when I gas it hard.

A buddy told me he thought it was my t-case chain slipping? Does that sound right?

Does anyone Know what tools will be needed to take the t-case motor off? My Explorer is about 3 miles down a trail, and I dont know of anyone that can drive up the trail :) ...! I want to be sure and bring the right tools with me...

Thanks,
Kendal

The O/D light denotes a problem with your transmission, not transfer case. You should have the codes read.

Normally,If there were a problem with the 4x4 system, the 4x4 high and low lights would flash. The popping noise from the transfer case may also be fixed by having the GEM reprogrammed. There is a TSB out on 95-96 explorers that recommends a GEM reprogramming for transfer case harshness.

I went up there today and took the Shift Motor off... The shaft sticking out was pointing to the "L" Position. There was also a "N" and a "H" position... I tried to switch it to N or H with my Vice Grips but I could not get it to turn all the way around.

What should I Try to do next?

Thanks,
Kendal

its a pita to turn but it should turn. try tapping the t-case with a mallet that might help it to shift. also you might want to try putting the tranny in nuetral when you do it.

...

Since the back of my t-case says I am in "L"..... Doesnt that signify that something else might be broke? I prob. won't be able to get back to my truck till thur. and I will try mroe to get it into N and into Hi...

BUT, It is in "L" right now..so im thinking it might be something else? Any clues??

Thanks for all the help,
Kendal

Out of curiousity what gear were you in before you tried reverse? 4 low?

The engine still runs right it doesnt stall? Does the ticking increase with rpm? Im just trying to think of all the possiblities i can here.

Did you try disconnecting the battery for ~30Minutes to reset the computer?? If not, give it a shot.

...

Hey,

Agent..I belive that I was in 4low...and I was in "2nd".. then I just put it into reverse and it just stopped moving. I didnt hear any loud pops (Like something snapping) It just didnt go anywhere.

I went back up there today with a smaller set of pliers and I cannot get the shaft to go from L to N or H.
I can see it being possible to go from H to N.. But the shaft must be turned more than 180 to go from L to N.
I dont know that the shifter motor is the problem either....since it is on the "L" Setting...

I disconnected the battery cable and Im going to let is sit overnight..thne go back up there tommorow and hope it starts working!

What other problems could I be looking at? If the Shift Motor is not at fault?

The motor runs Exactly like it always has...starts and Idles flawlessly... The ticking sound.. If I switch from N to P..it will not make the sound..but...if I go from D to P then It will make the Tik tik Tik sound..and it slows down just like the RPMs... the Tik does eventually stop..

Thanks,
Kendal

...

... I really need some help with this problem, if any can come up with any ideas??
I'm going back up there in a few hours to connect the battery and I'll post what happens after that. If it is not an electrical problem, then what other problems would I be looking at?

Thanks,
kendal

Sounds like somethin in the tranny broke. You say it only ticks when going from D to P. So you put it in D, the tranny tries to engage and turn, but you get get no output, so you throw it back in P, thus the tick comes from something spining in the tranny. Or it could possibly be in the transfer, but a flashing OD light points to the tranny.

Another thought that just came to mind... The shift linkage itself. Make sure it didn't come loose/break.

try to put it in N and push your truck back and forth (get some friends to help you). If there is something stuck in drivetrain/t-case then it may go away for a while.

...

Hey,

I went up there yesterday and Reconnected the battery.. No luck...
I tried putting the car in N and rocking it back an forth and I didnt get to far on that. My front wheels are in a little water run-off ditch, so it cant rock to much.
I tried turning the shaft that sticks out of the back of my t-case and I still could not get it to turn off of the "L" position.

Anyone else have some ideas? I think im going to have to hike up there with a come-a-long and attempt to get my car off of this hill.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Kendal

Sounds like you've broken either your input or output shaft in the tranny. Since it only makes the noise when you put it in gear, I'd say the output shaft to the transfercase is broken.
