My Explorer Overheated

Cory, what steps is FORD taking regarding this issue? is it a case by case or will something be rolled out across the board? What is the fan failure rate? I think it's significant, even my co-worker who own's an ex needed the fans replaced... I would be extremely upset if my almost new vehicle overheats, I would not care much if it was a lease, but I purchased it and I want to keep this vehicle for many years to come.

Nothing. I submitted escalate many weeks ago still hear nothing, so I don't think they are doing anything other than just fix it when it fails.

Because of this same reason, if people ask, my current recommendation for the Ex is a big NO

Good thing is, this post is #1 or 2 (depends on the day) in google when search 2011 Explorer overheat.

I guess we put enough word here may be Ford would give us better responses and resolution regarding overheating.

Buyers Remorse

I gave up Nissan and bought into the Ford quality rumor. Since buying this 2011 Explorer I have done nothing but regret it!!!

Technology is only valued when useful and not a distraction. The upgrade improved the response time and the crashing but it's still way too slow and quirky.

Now the AC is cutting out and the car overheated last night as I was trying to get to my son's graduation.

I'm asked frequently about the Explorer as people love the design but I can't recommend to anyone to buy it. With the overheating still to be fixed I certainly will not offer the Explorer as a good buy:mad:.

There is already a TSB out for the bad supply of fan assemblies, which affect a certain production date range. That bad batch didn't affect just Explorers but several lines of vehicles. The Explorer has a fail safe cooling system so losing the fan won't damage the engine at least.

I battled Nissan in court, won, and decided to migrate to Ford, so I'm in the same boat as you. I had a slew of little problems (window streaks, molding rattle, brake squeak, etc), however news today is all are being taken care of. So after a slow exhausting start to Ford service departments, I'm hoping future visits will be smooth and straightforward.

Overall I LOVE the new explorer, I don't regret it (yet) . . . as long as the service departments address the concerns that arise from us early adopters then I think it has a chance.

Just an honest question looking for the same answer.

just say you have in the market of buying a used car. 2 identical user car, similar mileage. 1 Car fax show overheated before, 1 doesn't. The manufacture have a "fail safe" in this model which "shouldn't damage engine at least", but which one would you buy.

G37RRaiders, I apologize for the delay. I escalated your concern and you will be called soon. I also sent you a private message with the details. Please check your inbox.

PnSnows, I want to help restoring your faith in Ford quality by assisting you with your issues. Please PM me with your VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name so I can escalate this for you.

Hello - I'm new to this board, but just wanted to say I'm another unahappy XLT owner. My 2011 XLT overheated this weekend. Our dealership had it hauled away on a flatbed (at only 3,000 mi) and I haven't heard anything yet. . . they have no loaner cars, and I'm waiting to hear when they think it will be fixed. I cannot believe that I am having problems with this XLT! I pay a lot of money each month for it, and for what, trouble?

Sorry to hear that. I don't think anyone that has not experienced the overheating problem understand our feeling about this. We all paid a lot of money for the EX, having major mechanical problem @ < 5k miles is somewhat unacceptable, especially the amount of overheating we are seeing.

Cory, is it ok for me to post the conversion I had with the Ford rep related to overheating? What she offered wouldn't help me but might to some others.

I would be unhappy too if I was having issues like yours after only 3,000 miles. I’d like to assist you by escalating your concern. Would you mind sending me a PM with your VIN, dealer name, and approximate mileage so I can help?

G37RRaiders, if you were given information that you feel would be useful to others, feel free to pass it on. However, I would not post private details (like your VIN or personal info).

My 2011 Limited Overheating Experience

Went to drop my child off downtown during a big event in our city. Lots of people in street/etc. Doesn't the thing overheat and send steam up over the hood forcing me to pull over. Coolant everywhere. Towed it to dealer and waiting for call from them however they are closed for long weekend so without a vechicle for rest of weekend. Had been noticing poor A/C for a bit and overheat light had come on one time week before. It has 6K on it.

Someone on the Ford Explorer FB page posted he had overheating and his build date is March 24... OUTSIDE the date range of the TSB (9/1/2010 and 3/14/2011).

I would suggest anyone having the overheating and their car is built after the 3/14 range on the TSB, post their info here has far as what their build date is. IMO this may deserve it's own thread to keep track of all overheating on cars built after 3/14... We seem to be doing Fords troubleshooting here lately.

Sucks that this person of FB July 4th weekend roadtrip got messed up... should give him lifetime oil change after this really.

Here is the info I have after talking the the ford rep (after cory escalation)
The I guess "Senior Ford Rep" I talked to give me an offer for 100,000 miles powertrain warranty. Whoever has overheat issue should escalate with Cory and ask for the same. However, this does not work for me because I already bought the 6 years 100,000 miles extended warranty. I am still in negotiations with them to see what they can offer me, I am simply asking 0 deductible if I need powertrain warranty in the future.

they should give you free oil changes for life... or every 5-7k however they figure it out.

I was out of that TSB date range and had the problem - overheated while out of state while at a soccer tournament. I've already recommended everyone test this - just wait for a warm day and let your X idle in the driveway with AC on Max. You can either watch to see if your fan turns on, or watch your engine temp. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to determine if you have a problem.

It must have been tough to be without your Explorer for the weekend. Have you had a chance to talk to the dealer since your last post? Please feel to send me a private message with the details I mentioned above if you’d like me to help.

donm527, thank you for posting that suggestion.

G37RRaiders, I really appreciate the recommendation to contact me.

Well add me to the overheat frustration list. It's happened to me a few times now. In traffic, A/C blows warm air, temp gauge climbs rapidly, warning chimes, I scream profanities! The most recent occurrence was this past weekend when my in-laws were speaking about how much they loved the new Explorer and couldn't believe how nice it was....and like clockwork, the overheat alarm came on and warm air was coming out of the vents, as if it wasn't already warm enough mid-day in Charleston, SC!

Once you overheated the first time, why would you continue to drive it?

City, is there any response from Ford on the date ranges? There has been more then one person who has been built after the 3/14 date who has overheated and posted on here & FB.

I'm nervous as well being my build date was 3/25.

Because it was just warning that started beeping and as it was doing that the traffic was letting up and I began to get to a place to stop and allow it to cool off, check it out, etc. But as I was increasing speed, the temperature gauge rapidly dropped back to normal. I still pulled over, checked everything...no smoke, etc. I started it back up and everything was fine. It only happens when it idles for a few minutes.

Same here, I'm nervous and my build date was 5/25. I always have my left cluster display the temp gauge just in case.
