My Explorer Overheated

I'm experiencing a similar situation with my explorer. I've had it two months now and just over the last week, the motor has started making a weird, higher-pitch noise (like a model airplane sound). At the same time, the A/C stops blowing cool air when I'm stopped - whether idle or just not moving. This has made my evening commute (when it's really hot outside) just awful!

I tried taking it to my local dealership this morning, but they had a lot of appointments and couldn't get to it today. When I mentioned that other owners were experiencing this same type of situation, the service guy totally dismissed it. I now have an appointment to bring the car in later this week, but obviously, this is going to be a battle with them; I'm not sure if it's because I'm a woman or because they are just inept.

Does anyone know of a technical bulletin or anything official that I can reference when I drop the car off? THANKS!!!
I can imagine how awful it must be without air conditioning and I’d like to help. I mentioned this on a previous page and in case you may have missed it, I would like to escalate your concern. For me to do this, please send me a private message with your VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name.

donm527, I already have your details so please feel free to drop me a line when you go in for service next if you’d like me to lend a hand.

UPDATE: I drove the car home and just as I turned onto my block to get home, the car overheated. I'm so irritated. This could have been prevented if not were it for the lazy? inept? jerk? that turned me away at the dealership this morning.

The car is being towed to the nearest dealership (not the one from this morning) and I am without a car to get to work tomorrow. Regardless of all the extra warranty/coverage packages we purchased with the car, the rental car/loaner coverage only kicks in once a diagnosis is made. Now, I have to use paid time off tomorrow morning while my car is diagnosed and then get a loaner and get to work. I'm really disappointed in Ford at this moment. Even sadder, I still love my Explorer!

For my next new vehicle, I am going to check out the service bays a few times. If the bays are full of "new" cars I'll be forewarned.

I wonder if the problems are a grand Union plot- intentionally allow manufacturing defects to pass through to keep the Union guys in the shops busy and to ensure future shifts at Union manufacturing...

Hi everyone. I just had the same issue with my Explorer. I have 6,700 miles on it and it overheated in Manhattan on Tuesday. I had to limp it home as Ford wanted to charge me $185 to have it towed to my dealer which was 8 miles further then the one they wanted to take it to. It ended up being the cooling fan that broke. Its still being fixed. I have had nothing but issues with my Explorer. Its now been in the shop 3 times since I picked it up in March. The reaction control module, the steering wheel position sensor and now the fan have all been defective. Im really not sure I will buy another Ford again.

i was browsing a ford edge forum and dont see any overheating posts at all. they have other issues... like transmission clunking sound and others... but no fan issue.

makes me lean toward a design issue in the Ex causing it to fail... hot days or running hard and ac on full all the time and whammo! ??

whats really concerning is that people posting on the forums and on ford facebook... we are a small number and a small sample... but so many are failing so fast. makes you think how the rest of the 60,000 cars are doing.

what is a reaction control module?

that turned me away at the dealership this morning

Some of you are way too nice with service writers. Want attention...park it in front of the service bay door that is busiest and lock the doors. Walk away. Wait a bit, and then talk to the service writer. Don't take no for an answer until you get it looked at and/or get a loaner.

I was very excited about the EX until we got this overheating issue, however it is causing nothing but worry on when the fan will fail again. I was stuck with a broken fan traveling out of town on the highway once (in a different car, of course) and I don't want to have to experience that again.

Right now I hope nothing more than the fan to fail 3 more times in the next 2 years, so that I can file Lemon. This is my first FORD and probably will be my last, unless FORD come out and do something about this faulty fan design, just replacing the fan when it failed is not the right solution.

If you're doing nothing more than hoping it fails two more times so you can file lemon law, why not just sell it now and get it out of the driveway?

If the fan batch was bad, and they are replacing them with newer correctly functioning versions, what more are you expecting them to do?

AC Blowing Warm and Engine Overheating

I feel relieved reading this forum knowing my problem is not unique but stressed that a brand new car can overheat. Never had this problem with any of my previous cars (all Japanese or German).

About a week ago I noticed the AC was blowing warm while idling. First I thought this was an efficiency/green feature. Then it seemed to be happening even at low speeds. Today when I restarted my car after getting gas (having driven about 20 miles before that), the high temperature warning light came on. I drove the car back to the house and have set up an appointment with Ford for tomorrow.

Seems like (or I hope) it is just the cooling fan issue.

I like the Ford Ex 2011 but am stressed about this.

Mine did the same. I took it in yesterday and they replaced the cooling fans in about 3 hours or so. So far so good.....seems to be working fine (knocking on wood).

That's interesting...yesterday, my temperature shot up after I filled the tank up. I was less than half a block from the gas station and a block from home when the Explorer overheated. Strange!

Could that be some sort of weird trigger???

Did your 00 V8 XLT overheated at 2000 miles and cost $45,000 new? if not, then I guess you have no right to question my action. If yes, the reason I don't sell it is because I would be punished by Ford's mistake by taking a big hit in depreciation.

What more can FORD do? how about people give all these people a better customer services. The car is overheated and can't be driven, how about a rental call right the way instead of asking them to come back when they can confirm the problem. How about some sort of extended powertrain warranty that they offered me to every one automatically without having to go through Cory escalation? Replacing the fan does not fix all the damages that overheating could cause. It is not like a MFT module broken that you can simply replace.

I agree to an extent with this. If parts have to be ordered (because it is a tsb), Ford should cough up a rental at their expense. If Ford has a TSB or recall, Ford should cough up a rental at their expense.

However, just because a bunch of people have a complaint or an issue (mechanical failure) doesn't warrant Ford to offer a rental. No other domestic manufacturer offers rentals for free. Heck, even Toyota and Honda doesn't offer them.

Ford does offer a 1st day rental when you buy an ESP which I highly recommend.

Also, if one does have the rental option, you are not required to wait for a diagnosis (pending it's not a 3rd party ESP). You get a rental the day you drop off the vehicle, period.

I've even had "can't duplicate" issues where the rental is still paid for even though the dealer couldn't duplicate it.

What is causing the fan assembly issues anyway? Is it bad manufacturing? Bad design? Maybe that will help us understand the issues better. Because I had an early build date and my fan assembly has worked fine with no whines (I hope I don't jinx myself) but I'm curious as to what is causing the fan assembly to fail.

i'm kinda wondering if we are now seeing more posts about it because its the first summer since they started production right? so outside temps are high, ACs are blowing on high and also people taking trips. just a thought.

Whoa there... I was providing an out, I didn't mean to ignite a fuse to investigate my profile for reply material. :D

It just seemed to me that taking a few thousand dollar hit would be most advantageous over owning a vehicle that you don't trust for years to come, and waiting, praying for it to fail in the hopes that you can get a lemon law settlement.

I've owned almost 40 vehicles now, and many of them have had issues. Well, no- all have, they're mechanical. New rear axle in my 2001 Sport at 300 miles. New rear diff and one rear wheel bearing in my 2003 at 4,800 miles. Lost a transmission in my 2004 Taurus at 13k. New engine in my 1999 Ranger at 28k.

In fact, most recently, our 1,800 mile old 2010 F150 that pulls the trailer crapped out a transmission. The dealer picked up my parents 55 miles away, took the truck to the dealership, and they got a loaner vehicle. They then replaced the upper gears in and left the rest intact and said it would be fine. So far, it's fine, at 9,500 miles. Buy a new truck to pull a trailer, and that's really all it does for it's duty? Lose a transmission and they replace half of it? That would make me nervous, especially for a tow vehicle. Sold the fishing boat to buy it- paid cash, so it was an actual $48,000+ vehicle as well. Even more frustrating. But to me, the cost really doesn't enter into it beyond the initial anger, because- a $48,000+ vehicle like the F150 has the same Sync unit as a $12,000 Fiesta, and that unit can make both vehicles irritating as hell if they don't work right. That's why I chose to wait for the 2012 launch to see if issues are worked out. I don't want the problems. That's my choice.

You don't know me, but trust me- I'm not a fanboy. (Pardon the pun) :) I'm not a fan of this launch. Personally, I think it's been a near-disaster, and anyone that's been around here knows that I think that, and have vocalized it. Sure, there are lots of vehicles that are fine, but there are a disproportionate number of them that are not, especially when you're battling the new GC and Durango. MFT is a disaster right now, the rain/roof noise is a joke, the pillars, front covers, the fans, and I've heard problems creeping up with some of the brake systems now. The worst part to me, is the hoops people have to jump through for some of this stuff is incredible, and that's why I'm still driving my 2000, and not a 2011.

BUT- I agree with you. Cory, no offense- because without you, all hell would have broken loose around here. But, the response from Ford corporate straight up SUCKS on this launch. Not the dealers, Ford. Raiders is right- you shouldn't have to escalate an issue like they have to here to get a swift response. Ford had so much goodwill lately, and they're spending every last cent of it on the new Explorer and how they're handling the issues with them. The dealers have their hands tied, because they don't have a solution, and to me, Ford is leaving the dealers hanging out to dry to take the heat. I know some of the dealership principals at our dealer, and they're so fed up on this one it's scary. They're relying on the dealers to fix stuff that the dealers have no clue how to fix. My salesman is steering people towards the Edge now, until they get their issues worked out, because his reputation is at stake. Ford is hedging a large weight of the future of Ford on this vehicle, and they're blowing it. JD Power already proved that, and as a shareholder, that bothers me tremendously. They're selling a crapload of them- right now- they could have a massive issue brewing on their hands if they can't fix them. I'm for rentals. Look at the Windstar- the rear axles had issues with corrosion, recall ensued, and they had rentals all over creation to get those people out of them and off the road. Guy at work had one for almost 3 months. Why they won't provide a rental, or at least a discounted rental, is beyond me. The dealer can't fix it yet, so put them in a rental if they ask. But, it's not policy. Should it be? Sure. But, there are rules, so I get that.

Raiders- I'm on your side- really I am, but honestly- in the case of the fans- I just think that Ford replacing a part from a bad parts run that failed but was monitored by a fail-safe system before it damaged the vehicle is a reasonable response. If it did damage the vehicle, that's another story, but for a discussion at a later time IF it does have issues. I'd totally be for Ford extending coverage to warped heads, and the like, however. But man- I really do understand your frustration, I've been there, I'd want an unmolested vehicle too. :)

Holy crap- Why did I type this much?

Holy crap- Why did I type this much?

:D

Actually very appreciate your response. Please accept my apology as I was being very defensive. I guess I assume you are picking a fight for no reason.

As far as the "Fail safe" system, do you really think you can trust it as they can't even get the fan, and the MFT right?

anyway, the only reason I am posting all these suggestions is to hope someone from Ford (other than Cory, of course) are reading them and how much that are ruining as car that has so much potential.

It does seem to be working as planned though, but yeah, I hear that argument...

That's the sad thing though- the Ex has tremendous potential- it was launching vs. the GC and Durango, most other comparables were in mid-model stagnant design, and they could have set the market on it's ear. Instead, I feel like I'm watching Ford release a Chrysler, and Chrysler release a Ford. It's immensely frustrating. Still though- not as frustrating as owning one and not being able to get it right...
