any ideas???

What does it do when your slowly accelerating?
Does it work ok...maybe she stripped the speedo gear.

You should start another thread in the Under the hood Forum for the second question... but are the RPM's surging?

hey, by any chance is it cold where you live, cuase up here in maine, My explorer maches my tack on cold mournings till it warms up and then works fine. So i figure I've got the fastest explorer for 6 in the morn till noon. 0-60 in under a 2 sec. in first. Impresive!!!!!

Yeah, a really stupid one...Could it be the A/C clutch?
You cannot hear it at high RPM but at idle it would be loud then quiet as the A/C cycles....
Mine does that and I'm waiting for the clutch to die to replace the compressor.

Fan

It could also be the hydro-clutch from the cooling fan, when the clutch engage it will be loud because the fan is turning full speed, and when it will disengage (never completely) the engine will be quiet because the fan is not turning so fast anymore.

one word : P.O.S. Lol. Time for a new car! J/k

If it only happened once, then it could just be that she lost traction and the wheels spun until they gripped. That sounds more like what happened.

And I do agree that the sound cycles are either due to the A/C or the fan.
