My new journey with the a4ld...

well i spoke with the local transmission shop and its ran by a long family friend (just found this out haha) and he told me to get around the pump tool is to just prop the converter about 3 inches off your working area and set the pump into the bell housing and converter and it works just the same. i know its not by specs or by the manual but if a trusted guy tells me he's done the same i will try the route...

as for the pump i took out i found a small hairline crack today... soooo time to put my pump in it that i got a while back from a guy! i know this one is good and it better work this time lol

You cannot allign the pump using the torque converter. Without the alignment tool, you may get a seal leak, gear noise or pump breakage (maybe that's what happened to the previous pump).

Recheck your fluid level. It takes a lot to fill the converter.

If the fluid level is good and you are still not getting any fluid pumping or pressure, check to make sure that you have the torque converter installed all the way. The transmission and torque converter should be installed together and then bolted to the fly wheel after installation. Some people bolt the torque converter to fly wheel first and then try to fit the transmission to it. Pretty risky and difficult to to do and the torque converter is not likely to get seated all the way in and be able to turn the pump. The nose of the torque converter to the edge of the bell housing should measure 7/16 " to 9/16". Anything less means you don't have the converter installed all the way.

converter was all the way seated... my first trans swap i made that mistake lol... and fluid level was actuall over filled but i knew it'd suck through the lines and such but since my pump wasnt working my fluid never went anywhere! im out to get the new pump cleaned up and put on... will post back here in a bit!

i really need to invest in a trans jack... i had the trans slide off the floor jack and block i caught it tho and muscled it in...this is where it'd be nice if i had a helper!

but either way the trans in in starter and tc nuts all good... gotta get the t case drive shafts and exhaust...and then for the moment of truth!

and she shifts like a dream! there isnt a rough shift to it! you dont even feel the engagement like i used to its just smooth shifting all teh way through! lets hope it lasts... trans fluid and filter flush next week along with hopefully trans temp gauge? any recommendaiongs on a temp gauge thats relatively easy to install? i would like to get one in the pan itself due to hearing its better and more accurate readings?

well with the Blizzard warning today it gave me a chance to go test the 4 wheel drive out =D it worked flawless trans shifting smooth still =D pretty excited!

None of the five transmission shops here in Charlotte NC including AAMCO do not use the pump alignment tool. They all use the torque converter to aligned it. One shop even snicker when I mentioned that tool and said it's a 100.00 ripoff and the torque converter is the same and simplier to use. ??? Glad you got the truck shifting smoothly and let's hope it stays that way.:)

thats exactly what the shop i talked to did...the guy laughed and in detail described how to use the TC to align it! i never thought about it until i heard someone throw it out... then i got back up opinions and bam went with it and its working beautifully atm...so still trying to find a good trans temp gauge kit...and where to mount it ideas. opinions, suggestions. ???

soo im looking for a good transmission cooler to add to ym system? any suggestions?

Get a stacked plate cooler. It's more efficient than a tube & fin cooler. WWW.SummitRacing.Com & WWW.JCWhitney.Com should stock them.

i foudn one that i may be interested in but its a fin & plate design?
these are the specs it gives
20,500-lb. GVW Fin-and-Plate Transmission Oil Cooler (9-3/4" x 11" x 3/4")

would this be effecient for keeping my a4ld alive as i do occasionally pull stuck vehicles out (not ever used for towing besides the brief bursts pulling out a stuck vehicle) not alot of stop and go driving unless im off road! i will someday soon also be looking into a n external filter kit and trans temp gauge? any recommendations on the gauge and locations or mounting?

That cooler looks good, and they claim that it's efficient. The pan is the most accurate place to mount the sensor. The next place would be on the line before the cooler. The remote filter has a place to add a sensor, but it's not accurate since the fluid is cooled down before it enters the transmission. A gauge pod could be used to mount the temperature gauge.

i wil have to do more reserch on the style. im trying to see about getting the cooler 94fourdoor has for sale in his thread.

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=298344

im trying to find more info on that one too! as for the temp gauge.. i found a kit for a pan moun ting one gotta find the link again here... will post back when i find it!

well i guess im now on to figure out my 4 wheel drive...its been working great... and today i went to engage it and i heard a bunch of super loud clicks (alot louder than normal) coming from the 4x4 computer in the back... my headlights dimmed way low with it...now i dont hear a click but maybe ever 4 or 5 times i hit the button with no engagement still....

tomorrow im pulling the shift module to check it lets hope its not the issue...are they the same from 91-94 explorers? i may try pulling the one out of the parts explorer i have and seeing how it works out...

well the shift modulators looked the same...so after disconnecting the two plugs and hitting the test/reset button it flashed 4 times... claimed all good did the same with the other shift modulator from the parts truck...test light blinked four times signalling all good...but still no clicks with the push of the switch... changeed my switch out and still same thing...turned around and decided to tap on the shift motor and voila... i get clicks again and it engaged.... guess its getting lost due to the bump stop...as soon as i get the torx bit needed will be doing that... and lets hope it fixes all my issues!
