Three days ago left stranded on the side of the road. Smoke pouring out from under the hood! Truck shut itself down and every light on the dash went haywire. We have had this truck for a while. Constant check engine light on which I was told by the mechanic that he checked it and NOTHING is wrong. He resets the light, it comes back on in days. Fuel cap light constantly on, and was told it could be a sensor but that there is no way to determine the exact sensor, but they can't find anything wrong anyway. It may just be a faulty light.

It started making a weird noise when you would accelerate, kinda like its revving up, but RPM's are unchanged. Then you look over and the temp gauge which had been normal the whole time rises fast and pegs to the H, and within seconds, the noise stops and the temp drops again to normal. Tranny was slipping, went and put fluid in it. Then they noticed the fitting where the tranny cooler line went into radiator was leaking and they sent me to another shop who had the correct O-ring who would install for me for nothing. And on my way there during U-turn is when the nightmare happened.

Had it towed back to the house and opened her up today. Replaced Thermostat and housing which was blown apart on the back side. It spewed coolant all into the valley on the top of the motor. While doing this I noticed the radiator is leaking around the seal of the top where the aluminum meets the plastic (worst design ever btw). Also noticed the oil pan is leaking! So after replacing the thermostat went to go change the pan gasket and there is plastic in the bottom, and a thin strip of beat up metal. Thinking its the timing chain assembly. Truck smells burnt up bad, and wont turn over either, which is how we came up with timing chain is shot. Anyone ever had any of these issues? And do you think that its the timing chain, could those pieces in the oil pan be part of the tensioning system for it?

I would think your timing chain started the problem but if valves have collided with pistons then your engine is history. Since the 4.0 is an easy engine to source you're probably better off sourcing a low mileage one & swapping it over.

When I had my '01 ST I had a 26,000km Mustang 4.0 on standby for the inevitable demise of the original. I later sold the engine to a guy with an explorer after his motor died (had already sold the ST by that point).

You have an ST with 142K. Has it been properly maintained, or do you check only after the problem occurs?

I actually had a feeling it might be a blown motor. Which does suck. Have some friends checking into a few options regarding the timing chain replacement vs putting in a new low mileage motor.

And yes I always did maintenance on the truck, however I have only had this truck for half a year or so and I took it to mechanics to do the oil changes and such. What was needed for the truck on time. I'm not really appreciating the last dick-like post. Unsure of how I am supposed to be able to know thermostat was bad. Its not like it showed the engine getting hot.

Thanks for the polite thoughts!

Tranny cooler fittings, radiator, and oil pan leaks don't occur overnight. They would have been obvious with inspection. GL
