my trans fixed itself

so for a long time now my 92 x has been constantly stuck in a forward gear and whatever gear i decided to shift it into (it has the a4ld auto) so if i put it in reverse it tried to go forward and backwards at the same time. Anyways i drove to my friends house the other day and my front left tire went through about a 6 inch deep hole right before i parked it. When i left everything worked fine. Is there any explanation as to why this would occur?

ok new development my mom is looking for an affordable small car so if anyone in the southern california area has a 4 cylinder compact car they are looking to trade for a 92 explorer or if someone is selling a small car let me know. or if anyone wants my explorer it would be good for parts the only things wrong are the trans isnt trust worthy and the gas gauge doesnt work give me an offer
