Hi Yall. 1st of all, dont yell at me for not searching. I know there is a lot of transmission posts on this site, but none of the ones i searched for(a good 45 minutes) yeilded the results/syptoms i am having.

1) I have a 92 4 door 4x4, and my tranny problems start when i first put the car in gear after starting it. I put the tranny in R (reverse) and it hesitates for about 2 seconds, then goes into gear. after that, its fine.

2) when im sitting still, in D (drive, the overdrive gear), with the brake on, im idling around 800 rpms steady. if i roll my window down, i can hear a slight metal clanking noise. I dont know if its related to the tranny, but its there. its hard to describe. its like smalls bits of metal is hitting a concrete floor. best way to descibe it. a clanging sound.

3) when im sitting still with the brake on, im idling around 800 rpms steady.(keep reading, same senerio). The tranny will want to slip, i guess its called. Well, it feels like a car is trying to push me from behind when i have the brake on. the ex will want to lunge forward, with several birsts, and ill have to put in park for it to quit, when it then idles at around 1200-1400 rpm.

is it time for a rebuild, or what? i know absolutly nothing about transmissions. btw, i have 139,000 miles on this tranny. and im about 90 sure nothing has been done to it. thanks yall!

Havre you checked the fluid level yet?

Also the rattling sound COULD be the heat guards on the cat converter.

no, i havent checked the fluid, part because i havent had time this week, and also, i had an oil change done by our ford dealership(free, thats why they did it) and on the receipt, it says they checked and topped off all fluids, and i know they did somewhat, cause my windshield wiper fluid was dry when it went in, and full when it came out.

and on the note with the cat. my cat conv. looks like its been submerged in saltwater for 6 years...it it safe to just take it off? and i guess along with the heat shields?

When my parents first let me drive our X, when I got my license, they told me to watch out because it likes to revv all of a sudden while you're stopped.
They said to turn it off if it does that.

Now, I don't remember exactly what the dealer replaced, I think they might have mentioned the torque converter and some other things.
Wish I could help you more with some more info but, it was a long time ago when I knew jack about anything that has 4 wheels.

well, Blue wont rev all of the sudden when at a stop, but a couple-few times, He will start to lunge forward, once, almost hitting the car in front of me. thats why i want to know what it is. thanks for your help guys!

Possible problems?

Maybe you should get you TPS checked out also you should maybe get your MAF cleaned, Causes your fuel trim to go out and your engines RPM will start hunting and surging (NOTE:if you have never cleaned a MAF before...a word of caution>BE VERY CAREFUL...a new MAF could run you up too $500.00 to $ 600.00 with core charge) I had my Explorer in at a dealership this past spring for a faulty TPS while in there they serviced my MAF with consulting me and they screwed it up (there's a micro filiament in side the sensor that dosen't like compressed air being blown at it!

I also had similar problems which went away when i put a new battery in....sensors are voltage sensitive to much or too little can cause a multitude of problems!

My irratic RPM was even more reduced(too nothing)by put premimum gas in the tank!

So in summary to my long winded reply...after having all thoses things done my Explorer runs awesome and has a lot of get up'n go!

I have alot more ideas for you if you want...just ask!
Hope i was somewhat of a help?

you were a help. the MAF was cleaned about 2000 miles ago, the tps and battery are fairly new. But when the lunging happens, my RPMS dont change. Also, i should add, when the lunging happens, there is metal clunking underneath the ex. but my rpms arent erratic.

P.S.

Bet you money it ain't your tranny!!!!!!!! Check the fluid see if it smells or looks burnt! If it don't i wouldn't worry about the tranny!

But still a possibility? I've had three trannys in 4 years on my '94 this last one seems to be holding on ......knock on wood!

Best of luck....ask if you have any more questions!

RPM surging

My RPM would surge enough that i could feel it but it wouldn't really show on the tach unless you were really watching it!

well, ill watch it tomorrow, and see if it still does it. ill also check the fluid after i get to school tomorrow. thanks for all the help!

Heya, I get that slight metal grinding sound too when my truck is idling in drive. But when I rev a little bit it goes away until it goes back down to idle RPMs. I figured it was my exhaust b/c it's all rusted out right now and has a couple small holes in the cat converters. I have no probs with my tranny though w/ 180,000 miles on it (Knock on wood! :D ). I had some probs a while back with it, but it was due to a faulty modulator valve sendin all my tranny fluid up to my intake and I had to put a quart of tranny fluid in it every week or 2.

Into your intake?

how did it send tranny fluid into your intake???

NICE59- you're in OK? Sweet...... :chug:

ya, today, it did it, and the rmp needle didnt change. also , my tranny fluid about an inch above the cross-checked aera of the dipstick. im at a brick wall right now...and yes explorer4x493, im in mustang
