It is for making you ask really good questions.

Questions I do not know the answer to.

Is your "steering system" backwards from what it would be over here? If so, thats whack!

Shane

what that part is that disk runs threw the locking sensor so when u turn off the vehicle and turn the wheel it locks and it has a locking pin inside of there that goes threw those holes on the disk.

Gettin' closer!

This is an optical sensor for variable assist powersteering.

the closest thing I could find for that is on FordPartsNetwork - it looks like the wiring for the turn signal lever.

wtf is variable power assist steering?

I think it delivers less power to the steering when you are going fast down the highway....so you don't turn too easy and flip. It gives more power when parking etc...

is there such a thing? It seems to me, it wouldnt need sensors in the steering wheel - it would need sensors in the wheels.

EDIT - its obviously a slotted-pair opto-sensor. Why its in the steering wheel still doesnt make sense to me...

because that way if a part fails somewhere upstream the sensor can tell the computer to try to straighten the steering and stiffen it.

I like the variable power assist answer. Seems right to me!

If you give me an engineering part# off of it I can tell you.

It's part of the flux capacitor. That harness connects to a small nuclear reactor that sits under the dash. If you know where the secret switch is and can hit 88 mph..... tell me not to do all the stupid things i'll do when ya talk to me again

It's a "Shock Absorber Electric Steering Sensor" (18B015), part of the ARC system.

It sends steering wheel rate and position information to the automatic ride control system to help adjust the air shocks appropriately.

What do I win? :p

all i can say is that its not needed :D
