Hello to the board..I am in the process of purchasing a 1998 Mountaineer AWD 5.0 l engine. The car has 124,000 miles on it. Service records for the last 80,000 miles are available, and done by a local dealer. Price is $3,600.00. Car is clean in and out. Would like to have advice on this purchase. Things to check out and wether the price is reasonable .

Appreciate everyones input.

I paid in the low 2's a month ago for my 1 owner '98 V8 AWD Explorer. $3600 isn't terrible, but something closer to $3k would be better. Leaves more buffer if you need to sink some $ into front end repairs. The V8 AWD, if maintained, should keep you in very good shape with minimal investment in the drivetrain. Front end would be the only big pending investment.

I put plugs, wires, upper ball joints, lower ball joints, shocks, rotors, brakes, inner and outer tie rod ends, upper control arms, sway bar bushings, u-joints and CV axles in at a parts cost of $1000 with an alignment, doing the work myself in the garage over a couple of days. It came with a new radiator, battery, alternator and tires. Between all of that, I have around $3500 in it total with a lot of uncertainty taken off the table. I'm only offering all this to maybe help give you some perspective.

Also, there's a '99 Explorer V8 AWD with leather interior and 220k in pretty decent shape inside and out for sale for $1899 at a car lot locally. Not sure if any of this helps, but I hope so. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you for your very good input. I dont know if i can get it down to three thousand. Unfortunatly, i also came accross a 2000 explorer xlt with 70,000 miles..at a ford dealer..clean asking 6000. I. Am sure they will work with me. Desicions

Holy crap... $6k?!?

Seriously- I would look at a private party purchase, a 1998 should be a purchased-for-$2,500-vehicle max. Miles don't much matter at this age. I wouldn't even ask the dealer about the one for $6k. Look at mechanicals- clean is pointless. They have them detailed. A private party vehicle that was maintained and cared for that needs to be cleaned up is much more desirable than a dealer buffed vehicle that needs new suspension parts, CEL's fixed, tires, brakes, and other hidden gems.

Where are you located?
