99 xlt
Hello all, and I would lke to say thanks for all the great info I have been getting on this site....

I have just purchased a 99 xlt 4.0 sohc with 62000 on it I love this truck and would like to hear some advice on this thing. First off I did not do enough research on this vehicle before i bought it. because in my opinion it has had some major engine work (plug wires not in original places, looks like replaced headers and general non-factory look to engine compartment) and front end looks as if it has been rebiult or reapired. OK OK But now its mine and im gonna take care of it....

My only 2 things I need help on is a rough idle on start up it will idle randomly up and down and it will stall if you dont let it....I cleaned the MAF and installed new plugs gapped according to manual and reset the computer by battery disconnect. The thing will start and ping for a few min then every thing goes away and its great after warm up ... I dont know about feul milage It seems to be around 18 to 19 (dont know if thats good or bad) any info that you guys might offer would be appreciated.

My second question is about an issue with blower motor on ac system under acceleration from above 40 or 50mph the interior blower motor will slowly reduce air flow untill it will actually not move air then when you get out of the accell it returns to normal speed. It doesnt seem to do it from a hard accell from a stand still just above 50 or so man im lost here? its important to know that I come from a long line of shade tree mechanics but im working on learning all i can about this thing since im gonna have it for a long time!!!

(and long winded from the looks of this post!!!) hehehehe thanks..

I believe from what you described that your SOHC engine needs to have the intake manifold gaskets replaced. There is a recall from Ford on this.
It is possible that with your engine "not looking stock" that some of the SOHC recalls have already been performed, if these were done by a Ford dealer then Carfax and Ford should have a record.

Cant help you with teh blower motor, but I have seen many posts on this inthe past so I believe it s a common problem....

I'm not so much help with the 97+ Explorer's but I'm sure you will find plenty of help from the others....

Sorry, I can't help on your problems. But I can let you know your fuel mileage is in the right numbers.
