2007 Mountaineer
I have a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer with factory navigation and the audiophile factory stereo.

I am contemplating whether to try to upgrade the stereo, but I'm not quite sure how difficult it might be.

I want to keep the factory radio since I like having the GPS, but the rest of the system sounds pretty lackluster. It's loud enough, but sounds muddy and lacks punch.

I don't want to lose any cargo space or functionality of the 3rd row seats.

...Now to my questions.

Could I ...

A) build a box made of mdf to house a low profile 8" or 10" sub in the factory location?

B) use line output converters to feed external amplifiers and still get better quality sound?

C) where in the world could I mount the amps? Under the 2nd row seat, or behind the right rear cargo trim panel?

D) is it worth all the trouble?

I have door speakers and old 2 channel and 4 channel amps, but the 4 channel is pretty darn big, so I'm not sure where to mount it. And is it worth all the trouble if I'm still keeping the factory head unit?

If anyone has done anything similar to this, and has pictures, I would love to see them for inspiration.

Thanks for any advice you guys have on the topic.
