My 1992 Explorer, with 72,000 miles, has 1 noisy lifter. I know that this is common with even low-mileage 4.0L engines and want fit it correctly.
This site has a great article on the subject that lists the price for parts & gaskets at $450. I haven't found the lifters for that little.
Would appreciate some direction.
I will also need the exhaust manifold bolts and valve covers as several years along the Oregon Coast has left salt air corrosion.:exporange

Noise is usually the result of worn rocker arms rather than the lifters. 72,000 is pretty low, but maybe you bought it used and it's really 172,000?

Best source of new rocker arm assemblies and pushrods is the dealer. We have forum vendors on here that are Ford Dealers and they sell OEM Ford parts just over cost. You can get the valve cover/intake gaskets from them too or just get aftermarket Fel-Pro or Victor Reinz gaskets.

Exhaust manifold bolts are another dealer item, though you could probably find similar grade and thread metric flange head bolts at a fastener supply or really well stocked hardware store.

If you do wind up needing just one lifter (or maybe it'd be better to get one or two just to have on hand so you have it ready to use), then I'd suggest getting a good one out of a used OHV 4.0L, I'm sure some members here might even have some good used ones to sell you.

I would not suggest using cheap aftermarket lifters or even using new aftermarket lifters at all unless you're doing a complete rebuild or if you are replacing everything on the top end and several of the stock lifters are collapsed and can just not be used.

Valve covers, you can just buy those used as well, or get a powdercoated set instead:

DNJ brand lifters are $25 each at RockAuto. Fel-Pro gasket kit with valve cover gaskets and upper and lower manifold gaskets, $67. Sealed Power rocker arms, $12 each. Sealed Power pushrods, $5 each.

Also check 1AAuto, they may have a better deal.

Don't forget your head bolts and gaskets. If you are going to replace the lifters, you'll need to pull the heads..

I replaced my lifters with some cheap ones from ebay, no complaints so far, but have less than 500mi on them...

Hey I just did a motor swap and I have a ton of leftovers including some nice valve covers. Let me know if you're interested. I have paypal and can ship them to you.
